General Early was remarkable for the strong attachment he bore to those allied to him by blood and for the kindly generosity of his character. According to legend, he took many orphans of the war, found upon the battlefields, into his home and raised them as his own children. According to the genealogy compiled by Ruth H. Early, the General was never married.
