Yes, indeed Thomas, I'm still out here! (Thanks to Kat, who emailed me privately to get my attention. -- Thanks Kat!) I have been thoroughly fascinated by the many and varied responses that have been posted. In fact, I'm going to email my Dad and my Sister with the GenForum URL because I'm sure they will be quite interested, as well. I actually know quite a bit about the ancient Irish culture and what I have been reading here regarding the Irish connection to the family is quite consistent with that culture. I'm sure most people would scoff at the idea of being able to trace ones lineage back to the _6th_ century (!), (unless you were some sort of royalty) but, in fact, if you were going to be able to do that anywhere in Western Europe, it would have to be in Celtic Ireland, where the knowledge and perpetuation of one's genealogy was a fiercely guarded tradition. In fact, there were special classes of bards who's sole job it was to memorize and recite genealogies. Bards were not just performers and poets then. They were councilors and advisors to Kings, Princes and Chieftains. What I'm still unclear about was when -- even rounded off to the nearest century -- did the Irish sept of the family go to war with the O'neils? Are we talking, Cromwell's time (late 1500's) or are we talking centuries before that when the English first insinuated themselves on Eire in the late 12th century??? Or somewhere inbetween? The O'Neils' are still a well established clan in Ireland with a thoroughly documented clan history. Someone associated with them might be able to tell us. As far as my original post, RE: Sir Jean d'Erly, it looks as though there may be a connection with the d'Erley's of England documented in one response as present in 1273. That would be only 50 years after Jean d'Erly's approximate date of death. And a change in the spelling of the name would be completely consistent with the haphazard spelling practices of the time. So, all in all, I'm really excited about this, let's keep "digging"! - Cym
