Connection to CSA General Jubal A. Early

My grandfather claimed to be a cousin of Confederate General Jubal A. Early b. 1816 Franklin VA d. 1894 Lynchburg VA. I have searched in every way possible, including through my grandfather's mother's family (Eddy family, also originally from Franklin County VA. I have yet to find a link. Jubal Early never married, but did have 4 children out of wedlock with a Julia McNealy.

My Gardner line starts with John Gardner b. ca. 1750, to William Finch Gardner 1813-1873, to Jacob S. Gardner 1846-1929. This Gardner line starts in Campbell Co. VA and ends in Pittsylvania VA. Jacob S. Gardner married Lucy Eddy 1845-1919, d/o Thomas Eddy 1799-1880 and Nancy Mason b. 1806. Thomas Eddy resided in Franklin County, VA.

Hopefully someone can shed light on this.
