MAOLMOCHEIRGHE: Under the ancient Irish, those of the lowest rank among a great tribe traced and retained the whole line of descent with the same care which in other nations was peculiar to the rich and the great; for it was from his own genealogy each man of the tribe, poor as well as rich, held the right of his own civil state; his right of property in the cantred in which he was born;the soil which was occupied by one family or clan; and in which no one lawfully posessed any portion of the soil if he was not of the same race as the chief. Up to the end of the 16th century, as long as the Laws of Tanistry relative to the inheriting of property remained in force in Ireland, collections of authentic Irish pedigrees existed; in one or the other of which was carefully recorded the birth of every member of a sept, poor as well as rich, by which was determined the portion of land allotted the head of a family and those dependent on him. They had no power to dispose of any portion of the sept land which they held during life time. The annals of Irish, as well as Hebrews, trace their descent from Adam and Eve, from which is traced the descent of the Earl(e)y family down to Maolmocheirgh, at which time it was anglicised, Early, Earley, Eardley, etc. Maolmocheirgh was descended from Adam & Eve's son Seth. When O' is attached as a prefix to Maolmocheirghe, it designated that person to be a descendant of Maolmocheirgh. Sometimes the name was spelled with an e on the end.
