In Reply to: 12th century origin of Early surname? by Cym Early of 2112

Irish Earlys were Maolmocheirgh before they were Earlys. The first Maolmocheirgh was born ca 542 A.D. in Ireland. His father's name was not Maolmocheirgh nor were any other family members called Maolmocheirgh, it was his name solely. His father's name was Donoch and he had a brother named Dalgan. The first Maolmocheirgh was from the family called Clan Colla. From Maolmocheirgh sprang the sept of O'Maolmocheirgh. For about 700 years the Clan Colla ruled as kings, the larger portion of Ireland. In the 12th century they were forced into submission to the crown of England. Many penal acts of Parliment were passed during the reigns of the Henrys and Edwards, kings of England, which compelled the ancient Irish to adopt English surnames, together with the English language, dress, manners and customs, wherever the authority of those sovereigns prevailed. The meaning of the name Maolmocheirgh is, chief of the early to rise. Therefore the English translated this name and changed it to the surname of Early.
