I can't answer your question about why Joel Early deeded land to Mathias Mock, Jr., but I have read that he was a rather eccentric man and disinherited two of his sons who had displeased him. In 1790 Joel Early made the gift of a slave to his niece Betsy,"in consideration of the love and affection which he had for Betsy."
Joel Early was the father of Peter Early who became governor of Georgia.
