William Earl was appointed guardian of James William Lindsey (my husband's gg grandfather) in St. Augustine, TX when Benjamin Lindsey died in 1838.Benjamin's wife was Mary Amy Earl.We think that Richard Earl of Catahoula Parish, LA was her father and Matthew Earl her brother. On the 1810 census of Catahoula Parish, David Earl, Richard Earl, Matthew Earl and Benjamin Lindsey are on the list next to each other.Letitia Gray, over 45 and head of household is two names away.
In Baton Rouge in the State Archives, we found a book called RAPIDES POST ON RED RIVER, CENSUS AND MILITARY DOCUMENTS FOR CENTRAL LOUISIANA, by DeVille. On pp. 22 and 23 are listed the Americans living there at the French post (which is the site of Alexandria now and just to the west of Catahoula). The first entry is Mathieu Graye and his wife Late and children, Simon, David, Jeanette, Late, and two young children who were children of one of the daughters. On the next page is Richard Her (the preface to the book explains that this name is most likely Earl and is written as a Frenchman would pronounce it).Richard's wife is Marie and there are two children. This date is 1788.
In 1789 Mathieu Graye and Richard Her are listed as Fusileers. In 1792 listed ON THE RIVER are Mathiue Gray, Lette, his wife, Simon, his son, David, and Lette, daughter. The next entry is Richard Herl, Marie, his wife, Mathieu, David, and Charles, hired-hand.
In another book found in the Louisiana archives, ABSTRACTS OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH OF THE FRENCH-SPANISH POST OF ST. JOHN BAPTISTE DES NATCHITOCHES IN LOUISIANA 1729-1803, on page 251 are baptismal records:
#2139Martin Erld
June 10, 1793, baptism at Rapides of Martin, born December 5, 1783, legitimate son of Ricardo Erld and Maria Gray of the American nation.Godparents: Carlos Huoot and Felicite Etie, both Catholics.
# 2140David Erld
June 10, 1793, baptism at Rapides of David, born April 17, 1787, legitimate son of Ricardo Erld and Maria Gray of the American nation.Godparents:Carlos Huoot and Felicite Etie, both Catholics.
# 2141Maria Noemy Erld
June 10, 1793, baptism at Rapides of Maria Noemy, born August 3, 1781, legitimate daughter of Ricardo Erld and Maria Gray of the American nation.Godparents: Carlos Huoot and Felicite Etie, both Catholics.
This is a typewritten transcript of something written in French or Spanish. "Martin" could be "Matthew".Also Mary Amy's birth could be 1791 which would be her age on the census in 1836 in San Augustine, Texas.
I have not researched Matthew Earl himself or his wife, but thought this would be interesting to researchers of Earl and Lindsey.
