Peter, thanks for the reply, I'm slow following up but haven't been able to find a marriage for this John Eardley and Margaret 'Aubery/Asbery' (I think it's most likely Astbury).
For the record, in the 1841 census there is a John Eardley, 60, Collier, b Staffs, wife Margaret 55, b Staffs with Eliza, 11, b Staffs living in Halmer End (Black Lane). This can be found at Staffordshire > Audley > District 5 > Page 9. No confirmation that this is the same John and Margaret Eardley mother of Martha but the ages make it seem possible.
In 1851 there is a Margaret Eardley still in Black Lane, Halmerend, widowed, age 68?, Washer woman, born Newcastle Staffs living with grand-daughter Unice Lea, 12, scholar b. Audley. Staffordshire > Halmer End > District 6a > Page 28
I have not found Margaret Eardley in the 1861 census but there are 2 entries in FreeBMD deaths, the first of which might be her:
Deaths Mar 1861
Eardley Margaret Newcastle L. 6b 53
Deaths Mar 1864
EARDLEY Margaret Newcastle L 6b 39
The grand-daughter Unice Lea appears to be in 1861 as a servant in Chesterton, household of John and Mary Vaughan, she is shown as 25 and also present is a Mary Lea age 17. I haven't done any research on the Lea line.
I continue to search for a marriage of John Eardley and Margaret 'Asbery/Aubery/Astbury etc' and details of Margaret's parents. Also any information on the parents of this John Eardley.
