Amos or Ames??

Now I'm really confused. My husband Richard Stephen AMOS has traced his ancestors to one William AMOS in Maryland by 1710. Now I've found a reference to a father of William, alledgedly named John Eme or Eames and his ancestors William Eme/Eames and William Eames/Eme. Am I crazy or could this be true? Romy (Okey) Amos
