EXETER - Herman "Gardie" Eames, 87, formerly of 277 Water St., died Sunday, March 20, 2005 at Rockingham County Nursing Home, Brentwood, after a lengthy illness. He was born June 9, 1917, in Reading, Mass., the son of the late Ralph and Elizabeth (Mohla) Eames and resided in Wakefield, Mass., before moving to Epping in 1978. He lived at the Squamscott Apartments in Exeter for 15 years, moving to Brentwood in 2004. He was a 1935 graduate of Wakefield High School and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II serving as a signalman first class aboard the USS Rocky Mount in the South Pacific. Mr. Eames was a manufacturer's representative in the paper industry and was employed by Longfellow Eastern Sales in Springfield, Mass. He was a member of the Golden Rule Lodge, AF&AM, Wakefield, for 50 years and a past Noble Grand of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Wakefield Chapter. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Virginia (Hatfield) Eames of Brentwood; one son, Glenn R. Eames of Burlington, Vt.; one daughter, Gayle E. Johnson of Epping; one grandson; one sister, Geraldine Beers of Wakefield; his twin brother, Ralph G. Eames of Reading; one brother-in-law, Harley Hatfield of Plaistow; one sister-in-law, Ardis Hatfield of Derry, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one grandson, Grayel G. Johnson. At Mr. Eames' request, there will be no visiting hours or services. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
