origin of eakes surname?

The name Eake means to lengthen a garment or to tack on an extra section of bell-rope or staff. and an additional half-glass or drink.
It also means to eke out a living.
It may be the result of years of transition from the Norman families of Jekyll or Jackquelin or Jacques, abbreviated eventually to Jakes or Eakes.
I am sure there are other translations so you have a choice to pick which one you like the best.
