Sinie/Sinnie/Sidney Eakes Note
Hi, I recently started to look into this side of my family and I keep running across a first name error I need to correct. Hope it helps someone --
My grandmother was Sinie Beatrice Eakes Maynard. "Sinie" is the spelling on her death certificate. She was named for her aunt who was also named Sinie Eakes before her marriage. This might have been spelled as "Sinnie" in her case but I don't know. I am seeing her listed sometimes as Sidney and also as a boy sometimes. She (first Sinie) lived in Hazel Green, Alabama.
Our first Sinie was the sister of John Marion Eakes of Limestone and Madison Co., AL and their parents were Charles M (assuming also Marion) Eakes and Sarah M. Sheriff.
I've gone wandering back through that Sheriff line for a bit in other people's research and I've run across a Nathan Sheriff who was married to a Sina or Sinia Underwood. I would bet pretty much that is where we got our Sinie names due to the country habit of turning an "a" ending into a long "ee" ending -- "Martha" becomes "Marthy," etc.
Hope this helps someone, like I said. But Sidney is definitely Sinie.
