I was born in Headford, County Galway, Ireland as was my father Thomas. His father John and his grandfather were born in County Mayo. I believe they came from the Shrule/Kilmaine area. My father told me that his grandfather worked as a gardener on the Martin Estate near Shrule which no longer exists. There is another family of Eagletons in Tuam, County Galway about 13 miles away from Headford. There appears to have been an Eagleton presence along the borders of Mayo/Galway for well over 100 years. The British author Terry Eagleton claims to be related to us and has visited my father in Ireland on several occasions. Former Senator Thomas Eagleton's ancestors are believed to be related to the Mayo/Galway Eagletons also. I was always told that the Eagletons came from Mayo but I believe that at some point an Eagleton wandered over from England in one fashion or another and made his home in County Mayo. To some degree, i have looked for that connection without success. I believe that the Internet will someday provide the link as more and more records become available. The Eagleton family was not very prolific since there are few Eagletons anywhere in Ireland. They seemed to have a propensity for having baby girls. My grandfather had six daughters and two boys and those two boys only produced three boys between them. Being one of those three boys. I now live in NYC and I managed(with a little help from my wife Pat) to have two sons and they have so far managed two baby girls between them. But, man, are they beautiful just like all the Eagleton females. I hope to believe that your Walter Eagleton is somehow connected to our part of the Eagleton Clan. I will be looking out for him as I tour around Ireland and the Internet.
