John,
I descend from Mary "Polly" Dye who married George Gard(i)ner Farrar and am also looking for William's parents. I find him in Lincoln Co by 1810 (served on a jury-Lincoln County, TN Court Minutes 28th November 1810).
My ancestors, George and Mary, died in the 1830s so she is not one of William's heirs nor is either of their two children: William T and Sarah Adeline.
Like you, I have followed very avenue I could imagine, but none has led to William's parents or even his place of birth.
