Odds are that they misused the word descendant. I can't tell you how often people confuse the meaning of ancestor or descendant, which is the direct line, vs relative or "collateral ancestor" or "collateral descendant"...meaning that one is descended of a "collateral line"... of cousin or ancestor of the person whom they are claiming as an ancestor.

It would be like Prince William claiming to be a descendant of George Washington, when his gt-grandmother, Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, was actually a descendant of George Washington's grandmother's sister, Mary Warner.
