The information supplied to you is correct for the most part, with the exception that the wife of William Devel/Devil/Devol, the immigrant, seems not to have been Isabel Anderson. It is my belief that William Devel of Spalding, Lincolnshire is not the same person as our ancestor. The information that Isabel was William's wife was supplied to the LDS Ancestral File by one Michel Call, who found the marriage of William Devel and Isabel Anderson (29 August 1639) in the records of Spalding which were extracted by LDS volunteers. Such extracted records only include baptism and marriages. When one refers to the original parish register (found on LDS Microfilm #1542018, item 2) the burial records include the following: 6 September 1642, buried the stillborn child of William Deavill and Isabell his wife. The above record is important because our William was in Massachusetts by 1640, and certainly at Braintree, MA where: John the sonne of William Devel was borne the 24th day, fifth month, 1642. The baby John was buried within days. (LDS Microfiche #6334416 - Records of Boston-Braintree) For obvious reasons, Isabel was not likely to have had a full-term baby in Braintree in July (the fifth month, old style dating) and then return to Spalding to have a stillborn child five weeks later. I'm afraid Michel Call failed to research the Spalding register and was unaware of the conflicting births. For now the identity of William's wife remains a mystery although I believe there is at least one record in Massachusetts referring to her as Elizabeth. Darrell Hooker
