Hiram F. Devol was the son of Sephen Jr. Hiram was born 1841 in Waterford Township and spent his boyhood on his grandfathers farm. Educated at Beverly Academy. He Recruited a company of volunteers in Waterford and Adams Township, Washington County, assuming all Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was promoted to Major, Lt. Col., and to Brigadier General July 20, 1865. At the close of the war he became a merchant at Waterford. There is a book called Southeastern Ohio, by Thomas W. Lewis, Hiram is in this. Stephen Devol Sr. was my 4th great grandfather. His youngest son Wing Devol is who I stem from. Stephen b. July 25, 1745 Howland's Ferry, Tiverton, Rhode Island d. October 23, 1803 Federal Bottom on the Muskingum River (just below Waterford Villiage) married: Rosannah Cook b. April 14, 1751, Tiverton, RI d. November 10, 1835, Rainbow,Union Twp. My sixth great grandfather Joseph Devol (Stephen's Great Great Grandfather) was married to Mary Soule, the grand-daughter of George Soule who came over on the Mayflower. George Soule also signed the Mayflower compact. I have alot of information on the Devol family (to much to put here).
