The De Valls of West Baton Rouge Parish

Delighted to find this site! Does anyone have information on the difference in spellings (DeVall vs DuVall)? Also, can anyone help me with info on my family line? I am the great-grandson of John Tabor De Vall of Ashland Plantation, Devalltown, West Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana (my family also had Orange Grove, the neighboring plantation). There was a Lt. Col. David DeVall who fought in the Civil War and a Richard DeVall(son of William?), who along with his wife, Edith, donated the land in the old market square on which Baton Rouge's St. Joseph's Cathedral was built in the early 1800's. Is our spelling(De instead of Du)a corruption?, since it does not make sense in the traditional French language. I have heard that the family were French protestants who emigrated to Liverpool soon after the promulgation of the Edict of Nantes(banning protestant church worship in the mid 1600's)--leaving Liverpool in the mid-1700's for Louisiana. (I can't be sure of any of this!) If anyone in this forum can help me I would be MOST gratful. Please e-mail me at your earliest convenience. Many thanks

Regards...Valerian
