Bonnie, Write the Bureau of Vital Statics in Richmond, Va. Or better yet, go to your local Public Health Dept. and ask for a form to send for a birth certificate, that is if you are in Va. Fill in the general information and write a letter explaining why you want to know. Do you have your birth certificate ? That might be more informative than you think. Your library can give you the address in Richmond and there is a fee, I think $5.00. Hope this is successful for you. If he has had a telephone, there is usually a way to find out. I lost touch with a friend for 45 years and luckily she had not moved from the last address I had, and the library found her immediately. I am in Florida and she was in California.
