William Pope DuVal, b. VA 1784, was the first governor of FL when the same became a territory. He settled in FL about 1822.

My lineal ancestor (2x g-g'father) William Stuart Pope 1789-1837 s/o Samuel Pope, as well as his brother John M. Pope b. abt. 1802 and sisters Elizabeth Pope m. John Tanner and Catherine Pope m. David L. White settled in panhandle (Jackson Co. and Gadsden Co. which adjoins it to the east) about 1820. My Pope lines seems to come from Francis Pope in MD d. abt. 1672 down through his son John and (I may be skipping a generation here) Samuel Pope Sr. d. Craven Co., NC 1758, Samuel Jr. 1752-1818 to William Stuart aforementioned.

Any DuVals knowledgeable re possible relationships between my West FL ancestors and the governor? If so pls e-mail me. thanks.
