I live on Long Island, New York. I have lots of cousins here with the last name of Dutra. Our parents came here from Faial, the Azores. I asked my uncle for information on the origin of the name Dutra, and he gave me the following, from a book called Familias Failenses (Families of Faial) by Marcelino Lima. I don't know if this book is available in english. He also told me that information on this subject is available from Doug Holmes on the internet.

The name Dutra first came to the island of Faial, Azores, Portugal when a man named Josse de Hutere settled there from the Flanders region of Belgium. He was the first Captain Donatary of Faial. He married a Portuguese woman named Isabel Brites Macedo. Some of de Hutere's brothers also came to the island to develop and clear it. Over the years, the name de Hutere was changed first to D'utra, and then to Dutra. Other names that came from Bruges, Flanders to Faial were Josse van Aard, Jorge Terra, Johane Groot, Grotas, Bulscam, Bulcao, Pieter Roose, Pedro Rosa, Herrn Jannequim o Arnequim, Willem van der Haagen, Guilerme da Silveira and Goularts. As the Dutra name intermarried, it sometimes can be found mixed with Portuguese names like Dutra de Andrade, Silveiras Dutra, Dutra Correia, and Pereira Dutra. The Dutra name can be found all over the Azores, but it most prevalent on the islands of Faial and Pico. The name is also found in Portugal, Brazil and all over the United States. I have cousins in New York, New England, California, Georgia, and in Canada. If anybody knows anymore about our family name, please post it.
