Dear Laura, As a descendant of Abram & Catherine (Weatherwax) Duryee through there son John, I agree that George is not a son of Abram & Catherine. However, my pet theory is that Eliza IS their daughter. Data 1: 1830 US census, Avon, Livingston Co., NY p.21: listed as Abram Duree [sic] 1 Male 0 <5 [John Jay] 2 male 5 <10 [Abraham H., Gilbert S.] 3 Male 10 <15 [Stephen, 2 sons who died young] 1 Male 30 <40 [Abram] 2 female 15 <20 [Eliza C., Sarah Ann] 1 female 40 < 50 [Catharine A.] Note: 1865 census Catherine states she was the mother of 9 children Data 2: 21 August 1850 US census, Nunda, Livingston Co., NY, p. 30: #60, #60 Duryee, George, 39, farmer, b. NY Eliza, 38, b. NY Elizabeth, 13, b. NY Hugh, 11, b. NY Emily, 9, b. NY Sally, 6, b. NY Eugene Howel, 5, b. NY Data 3: 27 Jun 1855 NY state census, 1st Elec Dis, Mt. Morris, Livingston Co., NY #448 framed $600, #463 Duryee, George, 45, b. Cayuga Co., NY Eliza, 43, wife, b. Cayuga Co., NY Hugh, 16, child, b. Livingston Co., NY Emily, 13, child, b. Livingston Co., NY Sarah, 11, child, b. Livingston Co., NY Eugene, 10, child, b. Livingston Co., NY Data 4: 19 Jun 1865, 3rd Elec Dis Mt. Morris, Livingston Co., NY, p. 19: #104 frame $500 #103 Duryee, Abram, 75, NJ, married 1, married now yes Catherine, 76, wife, Rensselaer Co., NY, mother of 9, married once, married now: yes Eliza, 54, b. Cayuga Co., NY, mother of _ children, married once, married now: yes Eugene, 20, b. Livingston Co., NY, single, artist for army Data 5; 9 Jun 1865, 1st Elec dis, Mt. Morris, Livingston Co., NY, p. 7 #33 Frame $800 #53 Duryee, George, 54, b. Schnectady Co., married twice, married now: yes Hughes, 27, b. Livingston Co., NY Chamberlain, Elisabeth, 35, laborer Monroe, Josephine, 17, child Data 6: 1808-1988 Centennial History of the Town of Nunda, ed. H. Wells Hand, Rochester Herald Press, 1908, p. 271-2: listed Eliza as daughter of Abram and as mother the of Eugene Duryee, veteran; According to the 1830 census Eliza could have been born abt 1812. I could not find a 1840 census record for Abram In 1850 an Eliza is listed with George Duryee, she may or may not be the mother of the children listed as last name Duryee but if the History of Nunda is to be believed she is the mother of the Eugene Howel listed. By the 1855 state cenus Eugene is listed as Eugene Duryee. I could not find George or Eliza in the 1860 censuses of Nunda or Mt. Morris. I looked in the original census books at the Livingston County Court House page by page. For some reason by 1865 Eliza is listed as living with Abram & Catherine along with her son Eugene and listed as being married once & currently married but the block for number of children was blank. I also found a George Duryee listed living with his son Hughes in a separate household. As Eliza is referred to as Eliza C. Duryee in Abram's will and she was married it would seem she married a Duryee. Other info about ELiza Duryee: File #2632 in Livingston Co. Court House" In citation to attend will of Abraham Duryee: Eliza of Mount Morris, NY Livingston County, NY Mortgage Liber 50, p. 506 This Indenture made this Thirteenth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty nine between Eliza Duryee of the town of Mount Morris, county of Livingston and the State of New York of the first part and Edward W. Petrie of the same place aforesaid of the second part, witnesseth that the said part of the first part in consideration of the sum of Eighty six dollars and thirty five cents has sold and by these presents does grant and convey to the said part of the second part, his heirs and assigns all that tract or parcel of Land described in doc... signed Eliza C. Duryee, 19th day of January 1869. >From petition for final settlement of Abram's will, 6 Jun 1870: listed as living in Gainsville, Wyoming Co., NY As her last place of residency was listed as Gainesville, I visited the court house and historical society in Warsaw, Wyoming Co., NY this summer but could not find any record of her living or dying there. The historical society had all the US and state census records indexed but no trace of a George or Eliza surfaced. I can not prove Eliza, the wife of George, was Abram & Catherine's daughter but some of the above data certainly supports this. Eugene and Hughes are not common "Duryee" names in Nunda & Mt. Morris unlike George, Eliza, James etc. I welcome any corrections, additions or disagreements with the above statements. Sue
