Dear Janine,

This is how your family is presented in my Duryea Family book (pending publication):

7-529.       Jennie(7) Adelia Duryee, born 31 July 1868, date of death not discovered, daughter of William Heyer Duryee and Jane Ann Tallman[Duryee(1955)]* married 28 March 1886 Ernst T. Giere, born December 1864* in New York of a German father and English mother (1900 census, as follows). Harold Taylor Duryee provides that Jennie(7) Adelia Duryee and Ernst T. Giere had issue: Anna(8) Roth Giere, born 11 September 1886, died young (censuses, as follow), twin of Richard(8) Everett Giere, born 11 September 1886, apparently alive in 1910, according to the census of that year, but not living at home and not otherwise located; Eva(8) Frances Giere, born 16 September 1888, apparently alive in 1910, according to the census of that year, but not living at home and not otherwise located; Robert(8) Farrington Giere. born 7 January 1890, living with his parents in Brooklyn during the 1910 census, as follows; Ernest(8) Theodore Giere, born 17 July 1893, died sometime before the 1900 census, as below; Dorothy(8) Rose Giere, born 12 June 1895, living with her parents in Brooklyn in 1910; Jennie(8) Ernestine Giere, born 2 June 1899, living with her parents in 1910; Charlotte(8) Wilhelmus Giere, born 19 March 1902, died sometime before the 1910 census, as follows; Unknown(8) Child, born to these parents according to the 1910 census, but not listed except as one of ten children where only six were then alive and assumed therefore to have been born between 1900 and 1910 and to have died young; and Alfred H. Giere, born about 1908/9, age given as 1 year and 4 months in the 1910 census.

As noted, we have been able to confirm and extend this information with the 1900 and 1910 Federal censuses. During the 1900 census, this family group is located in Brick, New Jersey, at which time the principals are given as Ernst T. and Jennie A. Giere, aged 35 and 31 with partial birth dates of December 1864 and July 1868, respectively, that they had been married for 14 years and had had a total of 7 children, 5 of whom were then alive. These are listed as Richard E., born in September 1886, Eva F., born in September 1888, Robert F., born in January 1891, aged 9 years (not 1890 as noted by Duryee), Dorothy R., born in June 1895, and Jennie E., born in June 1899.** Ten years later, the family lives in Brooklyn, Long Island and the enumeration indicates that Ernst and Jennie had now been married for 25 years and had had a total of 10 children, 6 of whom were then alive. Four of these children are still living with their parents: Robert F., said to be 19, Dorothy R., 14, Jennie E., 10, and Alfred H., aged 1 year and 4 months.

** 1900 US census for Brick, Ocean County, New Jersey: Microfilm series T623; Roll 989, page 33.

*** 1910 US census for the 8th Ward, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York: Microfilm series T624; Roll 958, page 78.

(end excerpt)

My hope is to be as precise as possible with the presentations of these Duryea/Duryee descendants, so should you find anything amiss in the above, I would be grateful to hear back from you here, or privately. I would also be grateful to have the parentage for Ernest Giere--and any other information you might be willing to share concerning your family.

Hoping to help and be helped,

Richard
