Dear Fritz,
The best, and I think only, candidate to be the Catherine Duryea of Hempstead who married Joseph Van de Water, would be Catherine^5 (Daniel^4, Daniel^3, Jacob^2, Joost^1) Duryea.
This Catherine^5 was the daughter, apparently the eldest, of Daniel and Antje (____), who had lived in South Hempstead. Antje (____) Duryea predeceased her husband Daniel^4 and he died in 1782, leaving four minor children orphaned; Catherine, Jacob, Mary, and Abraham. One son named Peter^5 Duryea was born to Daniel^4 Duryea and Antje (___), but he is not mentioned in the will and is presumed to have died young.
Grandfather Daniel^3 Duryea mentioned these orphaned grandchildren in his will, dated 25 February 1786 and proved 28 February 1789. One supposes that since Daniel^3 does not name his granddaughter Catherine by a married name, she was still eligible to marry in 1786.
This Daniel^3 Duryea is the same man we discussed at the Vandewater GenForum on 2 April 2002, wherein we discuss the Albertes family connection with Peter Vandewater and Daniel Duryea, who were brothers-in-law.
A continuing relationship, including marriage among children and granchildren, between this branch of the Duryeas and this branch of the Vandewaters, is both possible and likely.
It would be swell to know who the parents of Joseph Van de Water were and the names of Joseph's children, if any, by Catherine Duryea.
Richard
