John Duryea, Detroit, bef/aft Civil War

We have traced back to a John J. Duryea, who mustered in and out of the Union Army with the Michigan 24th, Company B. We know where he died and is buried, but from his death record we get no clue as to his family. We are not sure if he is a gg-grandfather or gg-granduncle (2 family stories floating around). We plan to send for his military record, but meanwhile are looking for any clue to his family life before Aug 1862 and after June 1865. He was born on Long Island, New York, in 1840. Many thanks for any clues or information.
