Duryea Family Genealogy Forum

Dear Bob,Duryea GenForum contributor William Downes is a fairly close cousin to you. The information you have supplied here greatly enhances that which had previously been known about your ancestor. The information I had gathered reads: Charles Wesley Duryea, born circa 1837, family records supplied by Mr. Downes state born on Jay Street, Brooklyn, Kings County, Long Island, date of death not ascertained, but circa 1906. From one of his marriage records and his death notice, we learn that Charles was married thrice, first to a woman whose identity is not yet determined and second to Margaret Rozell and third to Josephine Williams, who survived him. The cited marriage record reads: "Charles W. Duryea, of Brooklyn, New York, aged 31, Carriage Painter; on 8 November 1868 to Margaret Rozell, aged 26, of Brooklyn, New York, born Poughkeepsie, New York." This was her second marriage as well. Standing witness for the groom were William Duryea and Belinda Townsend, the parents William Hoogland Duryea and Martha Berlinder Townsend as ‘Belinda,' and standing for the bride were John Rozell and Frances Minard (a third unidentified witness is also present, Elizabeth Thomas [Marriages By a Brooklyn Baptist Minister, 1868-1870. NYG&B Record 116:136]. Charles's obituary is supplied by Mr. Downes, newspaper and date of issue not known, which identifies his parents as William Duryea and Martha B. Townsend, states that he was lifelong resident of Brooklyn, a sergeant in the 102nd Regiment, New York State Volunteers during the Civil War, and in civilian life was a carriage manufacturer with his business located on Sterling Place, Brooklyn, and a member of the Sterling Place Baptist Church. He was survived by his wife Josephine Williams and a daughter Ada L. Duryea, about whom nothing else at present, and his sister, who is not otherwise identified in the obituary, but is clearly Catherine. I would be very grateful to hear from you regarding your line as I would like to be able to include your data and sources in my compilation on the family.
