Dear Alice,

There is a very basic contradiction embodied in the statistics offered in your post:

"(3) Cornelia DURYEE,*b. bef 1711, Flatbush, Kings, New York & Johannes STRYKER, b. 12 Feb 1707, Flatbush, Kings, New York, d. 1785, Somerset, New Jersey, m. 1733.

And

(3) Cornelia DURYEE*, b. bef 1711, Flatbush, Kings, New York & Frans TITUS, m. 11 Jun 1757."

This would suggest that Cornelia will have had to have divorced Johannes Strycker, who lived until 1785, to marry Titus in 1757.

There does not seem to be any question that the Cornelia Duryee who married Frans Titus was the daughter of Charles Duryee, and the granddaughter of Joost Duryea, the immigrant, as the marriage bond for this couple, dated 2 June 1757, was posted by Frans Titus, the groom, and Derrick Duryee, brother of the bride (who married Elizabeth Titus, sister of this Frans).

However, there is no certainty that this Cornelia had married before. In fact, it seems very unlikely as her father Charles(2) Duryee, in his will dated 4 December 1751 and proved 3 September 1753, refers to his daughter Cornelia by her first name only, while referring to his one married daughter, "Helena" by her married name (Van Zandt). This would indicate that Cornelia(3) was not yet married in 1751 (The year in which her proposed son Isaac Strycker was born, as encapsulated below from your post).

There is another significant indication that Mrs. Johannes Strycker was not a descendant of Charles(2) Duryee and Joost(1) Duryea, which I will address after listing the Strycker children from your post:

Stryker children:

"4) Domenicus STRYKER, b. 24 Jan 1734, d. 1821,New Jersey.

"(4) Mary STRYKER, b. 19 Sep 1736, New Jersey.

"(4) Peter STRYKER, b. 25 Dec 1739, d. 26 Feb 1817, New Jersey.

"(4) Margaret STRYKER, b. 19 Nov 1741, d. 22 Sep 1828, New Jersey.

"(4) Cornelius STRYKER, b. 7 Feb 1744, New Jersey, d. bef 1784.

"(4) Cornelia STRYKER, b. 28 Nov 1745, New Jersey.

"(4) Abraham STRYKER, b. 30 Nov 1747, d. 25 Sep 1784, New Jersey.

"(4) Jacobus STRYKER, b. 23 Sep 1749, New Jersey, d. 18 Jul 1784.

"(4) Isaac STRYKER, b. 11 Sep 1751, d. 24 Sep 1817, New Jersey.

"(4) Johannes STRYKER, b. 3 May 1753, New Jersey, d. 1784.

"(4) Sarah STRYKER, b. 22 Dec 1755, New Jersey
d. 1786."

Of these children, Domenicus, Mary, Peter, Margaret, Cornelius, Cornelia, Abraham, Jacobus, Isaac, Johannes, and Sarah, only Cornelia and Johannes have names which may be readily attributed to forebears--in this case the parents (or the grandmother, if this Cornelia were named for the wife of Charles(2) Duryee).

While Duryea descendants tend to think of themselves as French, reflecting the area in Europe from which they originally came, the American family readily and quickly adopted the Dutch culture. This included the important naming conventions used by the "Dutch" families, which provided that children were named by a regular method. Elsewhere among the Duryeas in this era, these naming conventions were followed with predictability and there is no reason to suppose that this Cornelia(3) would do otherwise.

Thus, following those naming conventions, the first two male children and the first two female children will have been named, to a near certainty, for their grandparents. This would indicate that the grandparents were first-named Domenicus, Mary, Peter and Margaret. Further, though there are several opportunities to name a son Charles, after Charles(2) Duryee, this was not done.

The given name Dominicus would suggest a Vanderveer family connection here and if Peter was the name of Johannes Strycker's father, then Cornelia might have been a Vanderveer. In any case the source for the marriage of Cornelia "Duryee" to Johannes Strycker probably needs to be more closely scrutinized.

Sincerely yours,

Richard
