Dear Phil, Judging from the dates and geography you have assembled, this is John, or Johannes, Duryee, the son of Joost^3 Duryee, grandson of Abraham^2 Duryea and great grandson of the immigrant Joost^1 Duryea. This John was a Dutch Reformed Minister whose biography, though fairly detailed, is obscured by the fact that others, beginning with Teunis G. Bergen, provided an erroneous birth year of 1760 for Reverend Duryee. He was in fact born on 1 August 1752 at Bushwick, Kings County, Long Island and died 2 October 1836. The erroneous birth year of 1760 was picked up by Rev. Labaw in his work on the Preakness RDC (1902) and as recently as Russel Gassero's publication on the Reformed Dutch Ministers, published by the Reformed Church of America, New Brunswick. The confusion is multiplied by the fact that there was another John Duryee in the same general area at the time, of similar age. I believe this other John to be the man of this name whose records of service in the Revolutionary War are intermingled with the published accounts of Reverend Duryee's existence. Further confusion is created by the records of the Somerville RDC wherein baptisms for some of his children by his wife Mary refer to Mrs. Duryee as "Mary Lee." See, for instance, "Somerset Historical Society Quarterly, Vol. IV, pages 145 and 147. She was actually Mary Lee Brinckerhoff, the daughter of Hendrick Brinckerhoff and Margaret Ackerman. Better defining the indentity of Reverend John Duryee within the larger Duryea/Duryee family is made easier once his wife's family is identified. Of his several children, I have only trace of one daughter, who married Nathaniel S. Crane, and would be very grateful to have the opportunity to explore this family with you at greater length. Please email me at mccool.13@osu.edu at your earliest convenience. Sincerely yours, Richard
