Dear Daisy,

Many thanks to you and to your great aunt for working diligently on these connections. (I did mean to write Sylvanus regarding the obit, but slipped into "Socrates Mode" by mistake.) At any rate, its good to know that I was interpreting some of the meager data I had in hand correctly, especially the number of children born to Sylvanus and that Nellie was indeed his daughter. The obit I have a transcipt of is very confusing in this regard.

During the early 1990s, the late Cdr. Robert Owen Duryea, of Louisiana, was in touch with a Joseph S. Duryea, of Nebraska, who was a son of Cecil, grandson of Cecil and great grandson of Elva (off the top of my head), but subsequent attempts to to maintain communication with Joseph have failed. Naturally, being put back in contact with this family would be welcome development.

Still, my primary goal at the moment would be to adequently document the information you have now provided on the children/spouses of the children born to Sylvanus. Stats and parentage on Celestia Claus would also be important to have as well.

In my note to you in response to your Joshua Duryea ancestry, I noted that you and I share Jarvis ancestry and also mentioned in that passage that I descend from Nicholas Linington Duryea and Sabra Louisa Crossman. These were my great great grandparents.

Their daughter, my great grandmother, was Hannah Matilda Duryea (1864-1925). She was the wife of William Alonzo Van Siclen (1859-1916). William Alonzo Van Siclen was also a Duryea descendant, twice. So, in actuality I descend from three of the sons born to the immigrant ancestors Joost Duryea and Magdalena LeFevre: Joost^2, Jacob^2 and Abraham^2. I have been compiling the larger family for many years and fairly exclusively for the last five or six. So, I have a lot on the family. Hopefully, my many responses in this Forum as well as the message boards at Ancestry.com, and in private, adequately demostrate both the extent of my research on the larger family and my willingness to help others find their Duryea ancestry.

Regarding Socrates Duryea, all I have is from Jordan(1913):

"Socrates(7) Duryea, born 3 January 1828, died 8 July 1893, Corinth, Illinois, where he was a farmer, married (1) Lucy Agadore, by whom no issue; married (2) Lucy Holcolm, date of birth not discovered, but stated in Jordan(1913) to have been born in Nebraska, by whom issue: Ira(8) Duryea; Ella(8) Duryea; and Nellie(8) Duryea."

Obviously, you have more on the children than I do... .

I have had fairly recent communications with descendants of the brother Rulof, who removed to Corinth, Illinois, but this information is not yet compiled and there may be more "Socrates" information buried therein that I have not yet translated to my outline. I will have to go over those emails to see what might be there.

Richard
