Dear Jodie,
I wanted to add to this thread my original notes on the Stephen Cornell Duryea & George Washington Duryea family groups from the IGI:
Westchester:
Stephen Cornell Duryea married 21 February 1859 Mary Ann Evanshearer and had:
Garnet [?Garret] Duryea, b. 6 February 1860 [IGI].
Mary Ann Duryea, born 26 August 1861 [IGI].
John Duryea, born 24 June 1864 [IGI].
George Washington Duryea, b. 16 September 1866 [IGI].
Jennet Lent Duryea, born 21 February 1868 [IGI].
Rene Duryea, born 1 August 1869 [IGI].
Sarah Alice Duryea, bp. 27 January 1874 [IGI].
Fannie Marie Duryea, born or bapt. 18 September 1875.
Letty Jane Duryea, born 3 November 1879.
I then noted that:
George Washington Duryea had a son named Jacob Henry Duryea, born 12 June 1850 [IGI]. Also Letty Jane Duryea, born 12 May 1848 [IGI] and Frances Maria Duryea, born 11 April 1853. The names George Washington, Fannie Marie and Letty Jane are repeated in the family of Stephen Cornell Duryea and Mary Ann Evanshearer, of Westchester.
This is as far as I had gotten until Gwen Brogdon kindly obtained the census records for me.
To try to provide some continuity, I want to again note the 1860 New York City federal census for the household of G. W. Duryea and Rena his wife:
G.W. Duryea, aged 38, policeman, born NY
Rena " (meaning also Duryea), 36, b. NY
Mary A. ", 18, b. NY
Stephen C. ", 45, Clerk, b. NY
Lette J. ", 12, b. NY
Jacob J. ", 10, b. NY
Fanny ", 7, b. NY
Geo. ", 5, b. NY
Stephen ", 3, b. NY
Samuel ", 9/12, b. NY
Garret ", 5/12, b. NY
Bridget Murray, 23, Servant, born Ireland.
The IGI entries indicate that the 5 month old Garret Duryea is the son of Stephen and Mary. Therefore, if the IGI may be relied upon at all, Samuel, 9 months old, is a son of George W. and Rena. Without getting too technical, this might indicate that the father of Stephen Cornell Duryea was a Garret Duryea. This is just speculation, but offers a place to look for potential ancestors.
I think it is clear that the IGI entry for son Jacob Henry Duryea, son of George Washington Duryea represents the 1860 census record "Jacob J. Duryea, aged 10."
You will note that the IGI indicates that there was a daughter Jennet Lent Duryea, born 21 February 1868. This child does not appear in the 1870 household of Stephen C. Duryea. Also, the IGI offers a daughter "Sarah Alice Duryea, bp. 27 January 1874," for Stephen and Mary, but this child does not appear in the 1880 census with her parents. As noted in the previous message, son John, born in 1864, is in the 1870 census with his parents, but not in the 1880 census. If the daughter Jennet Lent Duryea can be documented, her middle name provides another family name to work with; also you have indicated that Stephen C. Duryea's son Abraham B. Duryea, aged 2 years in the 1880 census, has the middle name Brewer--so this is still another family name to ponder.
I agree with you that the middle name Cornell for Stephen Duryea indicates the family Cornell. And there are Duryea and Cornell family intermarriages. But, I have yet to come up with a plausible connection.
You have probably already learned that there are two distinct early colonial Cornell families, one Dutch, the other English. I descend from the Dutch ones. The English ones include the family of Ezra Cornell, founder of Cornell University. My "feeling" at the moment is that Stephen Cornell Duryea is named for a member of the English Cornells. This primarily because the given name Stephen is relatively rare among the Duryeas and the Dutch Cornells.
Before closing, I want to mention this couple:
Fanny M. Duryea, married 12 March 1867 James F. Aitkin [Methodist Church Marriages 1785-1893].
I think she, too, may be related to this group.
