Durrett Family Genealogy Forum

Mr. Booth, I was delighted to see your posting. I have never been on a site like this and was fascinated to see my grandfather, great grandfather, etc. right there. I am the third of four boys of Bowen Lavorne Durrett. My grandfather's name was Burk and my grandmother's name was Mamie Saunders. She died of appendicitis when my dad was about four. One of the Aunts that eventually ended up in California kept my dad for the two or so years after Mamie died. When my dad was 6, he remarried to Effie, who was the only grandmother I ever knew. My granfather was originally a farmer there in Terrell/Ryan but ended up doing oil field work, in Corsicana, Texas, back to Oklahoma for a while and when my dad was ten or so they moved to Conroe, Texas where he later met my Mom. I remember well going to Uncle Alf's farm there in Ryan or there about. He was a water melon farmer.
Uncle Oscar and Aunt Birdie Lee moved to Houston during the dust bowl to be close to Burk. His oldest boy, Max, was like a brother to my dad because they were close in age. I also knew Houston (now dead) and Joe quite well. Uncle Oscar was quite close to Bob and I met Uncle Bob once. My dad saw him once way back in California. Uncle Oscar talked about Uncle Bob a lot.
My grandfather's grandfather and his brothers were surveyors in Fort Worth, Tarrant county, Texas and my grandmother told me they did some of the first survey work in Tarrant County. They were substantial in monetary terms at one point. They ended up just across the Red River in Indian Territory. I'm not sure what year, nor the exact circumstances. I am quite sure they moved to Oklahoma in the late 19th century where my grandfather and his brothers were either born or born and raised.
I am the third of four boys. My oldest brother Kenneth is dead. My second brother is Bowne Wayne and he lives in Arizona. My little brother Dennis lives here in Jacksonville, Texas where i live. I have two sons, Kenneth and Drew. Kenneth has two sons and Drew (my youngst) just married last year. I remember Uncle Alf's boys and Uncle Alf. I am sure Uncle Alf's wife would remember us. My Grandfather (Burk) died in 1961 in Conroe. Effie lived until sometime in the '90's. I loved her dearly.
I would certainly like to learn more. LKD
