An observation : Some descendants are "correcting" census records on Ancestry.com . This is an exercise in futility as no one reasly knows the roots of this surname. Descendsnts are merely going by what version their immediate family favored. Over the decades somed families used two ot more versions. My ancestors in Virginia favored Durnel but their father was Durnil. The oldest I find is Durnil in Maryland.

Next subject : Migration patterns.
Before 1790 - Maryland, Delaware, Chester County, Pa.
1790-1810 - Wythe and Grayson Counties,Virginia.
1810 and later - Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky.
1830 and later - add Missouri, Illinois, Arkansas.
There may have been a few "mavericks" but the above were the main paths. Almost all were Quakers who left the South ca 1800-1810 over their opposition to slavery.

I have spent several weeks tracing these various migrants and I am compiling a file on them. I will offer this file here in a few weeks when I have it substantislly completed. If interested, stay tuned.

- Ken
