I have been working on the Durfee/Durfey line for some time and have posted some information in the past on the Durfee Genforum. I have been working on some other lines, so I need to refresh a little on this line.My husband is descended from Ebenezer Durfee, son of Joseph Durfee and brother of Elijah(excuse the spelling---I have found so many spellings of this name and would suggest that you check out the Durfee site.CharlesDurfee has a lot of well researched info on that site).
My husband's aunt did much research on this line and is probably responsible for much of the information posted on the LDS Family-search site.Going through some of her later research, I think that we need to do more research on the John Durfee/Mercy Foster line.Grandpa had a notation penciled on this family group sheet that Mercy may have been the daughter of Thomas Manchester of Cranston, R.I.This would mean that Foster was a married name.Thomas named James Durfee as his grandson in his will.Another family researcher feels that Mercy and John are not the correct line, and that ---I can't remember, a Thomas or Richard Durfey/Durfee and Sarah Briggs are Joseph's parents. It is important to remember that in the time periods we are researching, there is no set spelling and their names were spelled in a variety of ways.
The tie in to the earliest Thomas Durfee is also questionable. Many tied John into that line because he lived in the same area at the same time, but an old photocopy in Grandpa's book says that John was not listed in Benjamin's will.He was just assumed to be the son.
Great Aunt Jane, granddaughter of Francillo Durfee-- Ebenezer's son--claimed that Francillo's "grandfather" came alone as a young boy from Ireland by way of Canada.Everyone thought she was crazy because "everyone" knows that the Durfees are D'Urfy's from France. But another granddaughter from Francillo's second wife recorded that same Irish tradition as did Margaret Durfy, a descendant of their brother, Jedediah. And these people had never met. There are a lot of postings on the Durfee genforum looking for Irish Durfee's who came over in the 1850's.
We really need to get together--no matter how we spell our name---and see if we can find some documentation to solve this problem of our heritage.Janis Durfee
