8. Richard4 Durfee (Richard3, Richard2, Thomas1) was born April 20, 1740 in New London, CT, and died September 25, 1780 in New London, CT. He married Sarah Read April 8, 1759 in Newport, RI, daughter of William Read and Sarah.

Richard's birth is from a card file of vital records in the Connecticut State Library in Hartford and is recorded in New London Vital Records Book 2, page 48. The birth's of both Richard and Sarah Read are also in the Durfee / Harris Family Bible in the in the State Library.
They were married in Trinity Church in Newport, RI. Arnold's Vital Records of Rhode Island, Trinity Church Records Volume 10, page 446 gives April 8, 1757, probably incorrectly) as their marriage date. The marriage date of Richard and Sarah Read is also recorded in the Durfee / Harris Family Bible in the Connecticut State Library in Hartford and is given (probably correctly) as April 8, 1759.
According to Non Military Revolutionary War Service, New London Town Council Meetings, in Volume 1, page 23, in 1779, Richard Durfey was on a committee to care for soldiers families.
Richard Durfey's death was September 25, 1780, as recorded in the Durfee / Harris Family Bible in the Connecticut State Library in Hartford, as were the deaths of Sarah (Read) Durfey's parents. The Cemetery Records of Waterford, CT, in the card file in the Connecticut State Library give, incorrectly, September 24, 1780, as Richard's death date.
Book 2, page 232 of the records of the Registry of Probate in Taunton, MA, is the will of William Read of Swansea, late of Newport, a merchant. Dated December 8, 1781, and proved November 5, 1782. He left his wife Sarah land in Swansea and Newport and to his daughter Sarah Durfey, widow, of New London, 2 lots in Newport.
The New London Probate File # 1856, dated April 1783, is the distribution of the estate of Richard Durfey. His widow received a share, his daughters Sarah Sally Wilson received !/8, Elizabeth Harris !/8, and Polly, Rebecca and Esther Durfey each received 1/8. His son Richard received a double share 2/8. Included in the widow Sarah (Read) Durfey's share of the estate were several Negro slaves, one named Cate, a girl named Nan, a man named Tony, another man named Hercules. From Brown's Black Roots in Southeast Connecticut on pages 476, 506, 536 and 584.
When the U. S. 1790 census of New London was taken Richard's widow, Sarah (Read) Durfey, was living with her son Richard and the family was 1 male over 16, 3 females and 6 slaves.
On December 19, 1801, Sarah Durfey of Waterford, CT, deeded to her son Richard the house and all lands she received in the distribution of the estate of her husband Richard Sr.
Richard and Sarah were buried in the Waterford Cemetery in Waterford, CT. Waterford was part of New London, CT, until 1801.

When the U. S. 1820 census of Stonington, CT, was taken Richard was dead and Grace's family was 1 male 16-18, 2 males 16-26 (Possibly Nathaniel and Thomas Guion Jr.), 3 females 16-26, 1 female 26-45, 2 females over 45 (Grace and possibly Richard's sister Polly).

Thomas Durfey's estate, Case # 1858, was distributed by Richard Durfey, who was appointed administrator by the New London Probate Court, to Thomas' nieces and nephew. Elizabeth Harris gave a receipt dated August 10, 1794, for a portion of her share and on May 12, 1797, her husband, Peter B. Harris, signed a receipt for the balance.
About 1803-1804, in Book J 8, page 287, Elizabeth was made guardian of Peter Harris Jr. by the New London Probate Court.

The marriage of Rebecca and Thomas Guion in from the Morman International Genealogical Index. It states that they married in Trinity Church in New York.
Thomas and Rebecca Durfey had no children. Thomas Durfey's estate, Case # 1858, was distributed by Richard Durfey, who was appointed administrator by the New London Probate Court, to Thomas' nieces and nephew. On August 15, 1795, Thomas Guion signed a receipt for forty eight pounds, six shillings, and six pence the full share of his deceased wife in that estate.

According to John Pember in the Pember Genealogy on pages 103-105 Thomas Guion Jr. lived in Tarborough, NC, apparently with his father but he also implys that at one time Guion lived in Batavia, NY.

Grace's birth is from Wheeler's History of Stonington on page 520. Grace's parents, birth, marriage, children and death are from Wildey's Cheseborough Genealogy on pages 54 and 186. The Cheseborough Genealogy gives, probably incorrectly, February 18, 1796, as their marriage date. The New London Gazette issue of March 5, 1795, states that Richard Durfey of New London married Grace Palmer of Stonington in Stonington.

In 1789 Richard was a member of the 6th Company 3rd Infantry Regiment of Connecticut Militia. He and 49 other New London County men petitioned the State Legislature to designate them as the 5th Company (or Troop) 2nd Regiment Light Dragoons. The petition was granted. Connecticut Archives Volume 3, pages 177A-179.
When the U. S. 1790 census of New London was taken Richard Durfey Sr.'s widow, Sarah (Read) Durfey, was living with her son Richard and the family was 1 male over 16, 3 females and 6 slaves.
Richard Durfey and Nathaniel Palmer Jr. were partners in a retail grocery store on Rope Ferry Rd. in New London. The business was dissolved January 22, 1798. From Bachman's History of Waterford.
Richard held the title captain.
When the U. S. 1800 census of New London was taken Richard's family was 1 male 0-10, 1 male 26-45, 2 females 0-10, and 1 female 26-45. Living in the same house was the family of his mother Sarah.
Waterford, CT, was set off from New London in 1801.

Richard moved to Stonington about 1815.
According to the Rhode Island Republican issue of January 21, 1818 Richard died in Groton on January 8, 1818. He had kept a tavern in Newport, RI, for a short time before his death. This information is confirmed by the H. E. Turner Cemetery book # 178 in the Newport Historical Society Vault.
In his will dated September 27, 1819, Nathaniel Palmer of Stonington, CT, left his daughter Grace Durfey $ 300.00. He and Grace's mother were buried in Stonington, CT.
When the U. S. 1820 census of Stonington, CT, was taken Richard was dead and Grace's family was 1 male 16-18, 2 males 16-26 (Possibly Nathaniel and Thomas Guion Jr.), 3 females 16-26, 1 female 26-45, and 2 females over 45 (Grace and possibly Richard's sister Polly).
According to John Pember in the Pember Genealogy on pages 103-105 Grace (Palmer) Durfey may have lived in or near Batavia, NY, about 1825-1830.
I have a note that both Nathaniel and his mother were buried in Stonington but in the Cheseborough Genealogy her burial place is said to be Lockport, NY. I don't have the source recorded. Grace's death and burial in Lockport is from Wildey's Cheseborough Genealogy on page 186.
In the Stonington, CT, Library there is a book bearing the title Captain Nathaniel B. Palmer, An Old Time Sailor of the Seas, by Spears. Nathaniel Palmer was Grace's brother and an uncle of Nathaniel Durfey.

She married Hyde or Pember. According to Wildey's Cheseborough Genealogy on page 186, Sarah married Mr. Hyde. The vital records of Stonington, CT, show that Grace N. Durfey married Jabez Hyde in Stonington January 4, 1836. Both were of New York.

Notes for Nathaniel Durfee:
Nathaniel was a mariner and had the title captain. Nathaniel never married and left his estate to his niece. At the time of his death he owned 1/2 interest in property in Lockport, NY, which he probably inherited from his mother.
Nathaniel's death was recorded with the Stonington Town Clerk in the 1860 Deaths Book on page 23. The death record states that he was 67, unmarried and died of liver disease.
In his will dated March 12, 1862, and recorded in the Stonington Town Hall in Probate Book 20, pages 623 and 685, Nathaniel left his entire estate, including property in Lockport, NY, called the "Arcade Property", to his niece, Anna Pauline Williams, of Stonington, wife of Ephraim Williams. The inventory of his estate was done by his uncle Captain Nathaniel B. Palmer 2nd.
In the Daughters of the American Revolution Records in the New York State Library in Albany in Book D, page 11, there is a record of a will for Nathaniel recorded in Niagra County, New York. In that same record there is a grantee index for deeds in Lockport, Niagra County, NY. In 1853 he received property on Main Street from Joseph Denniston. Deeds Book 59, page 68. In 1858 also from Joseph Denniston he was deeded property on Market and Garden Streets. Deeds Book 79, page 331. James Denniston was married to his sister Pauline.
I have a note that both Nathaniel and his mother were buried in Stonington. I don't have the source recorded. Grace died in Lockport, NY.

31. Esther5 Durfee (Richard4, Richard3, Richard2, Thomas1) was born April 20, 1772 in New London, CT, and died February 3, 1814 in Lyme, CT. She married Enoch Lord, son of Enoch Lord and Hepsibah Marvin.
Notes for Esther Durfee:
The New London Probate File # 1856, dated April 1783, is the distribution of the estate of Richard Durfey. His widow received a share, his daughters Sarah Sally Wilson received !/8, Elizabeth Harris !/8, and Polly, Rebecca and Esther Durfey each received 1/8. His son Richard received a double share 2/8. Included in Esther (Durfey) Lord's share of the estate was a negro girl named Else. From Brown's Black Roots in Southeast Connecticut on page 459.
The birth of Esther is recorded in the Durfee / Harris Family Bible in the Connecticut State Library in Hartford. The birth of Esther is from the New London Vital Records and the births of Enoch and their children are from the Lyme, CT, Vital Records.
Their marriage is from the New London First Church of Christ records Book 2, page 156. It was also recorded in the Lyme Vital Records in Book 2, page 1.
The deaths of Enoch, Esther and Mary are from the Duck River cemetery records in the card file in the Connecticut State Library in Hartford.
Enoch and Esther were life long residents of Lyme, CT. They were buried in Duck River Cemetery in Lyme.
Thomas Durfey,s estate, Case # 1858, was distributed by Richard Durfey who was appointed administrator by the New London Probate Court to Thomas' nieces and nephew. The receipt from Enoch Lord for his wife's share was dated May 9, 1796.
The Probate Records of Enoch's Estate dated 1834 were recorded in the Lyme Town Hall in Book 425, page 425. His children were not mentioned , only his second wife, Phebe.
