Elizabeth Aborn, born May 20, 1765 in Tolland, CT; died Abt. 1855 in Milford, OH; married Elijah Durfey January 25, 1787 in Tolland, CT. Generation No. 5
16. John Durfey, born Bef. 1712 in Poss. RI; died January 11, 1772 in Canterbury, CT. He married 17. Mercy Foster Bef. 1730. 17. Mercy Foster, born Bef. 1712; died WFT Est. 1730-1796. Notes for John Durfey: Nothing is known of John's ancestry. There is a tradition among some of his descendants that he was born in 1706, in Ireland, and came to Rhode Island at the age of 10. It is believed that this tradition was found by Alice J. Rice in a quote in the Hartford Times (Hartford, Ct, or Hartford, OH, ?) newspaper, of Daniel I. Durfee, of Hartford, OH. He was a seventh generation descendant of John and Mercy. While this is possible, it is more likely that he was a descendant of Thomas Durfee (1643-1712), of Portsmouth, Rhode Island. On December 23, 1726, in Middleborough, MA, a John Durfey married Katherine Mortimer of Taunton, MA. This John Durfey could not possibly be the son of Robert Durfee as that John married Susannah Eddy in 1716 and she was still his wife in circa 1740 when both their names appeared on a deed. Since it is clear that the John who married Katherine could not have been the son of Robert, is it possible that he was the John Durfey who settled in Lisbon, CT, and that Mercy Foster was his second wife ? Which other sons and grandsons of Thomas lived in the Taunton-Middleborough area ? John's date of death is from the Canterbury, CT, Deaths Book 1, page 131. In The Descendants of Thomas Durfee , Volume l, page 195, William F. Reed, incorrectly, lists January 11, 1772, Canterbury, CT, for the death of John4 Durfee (# 62 in Reed), son of John3 and Susannah (Eddy) Durfee (Robert2, Thomas1). John ( # 62) and his son John Jr. ( # 154) moved to Berkshire County, Massachusetts, and both were still living and listed on the U. S. 1790 census of that county. The identification of Mercy is uncertain. In the Genealogical Society of Utah Library in Salt Lake City, there is a family group sheet for John's family which states that he married Miss Foster. The sheet is not dated, no sources are given and its author is not identified. On October 25, 1741, Mercy, "wife of John", was baptized in the Newent Congregational Church in the Newent District of Norwich, CT. That district was incorporated as Lisbon, CT, in 1786. On Aug 8, 1742, Mercy had her sons Joseph, James and Benjamin baptized. These were recorded in the Newent Church records Volume 1, page 64. It is probable that John and Mercy settled in the Newent District not long before her baptism or about 1740. The order of birth of John's children is not certain. On June 10, 1746, John enlisted as a private in Colonel Elisha Williams' Regiment for the military expedition to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, and participated in the siege and capture of the French Fortress at Louisbourg. He was discharged on October 31, 1747. From Connecticut Colonial Archives Volume XV, page 1455. As an interesting aside, one of the vessels used to transport the Connecticut troops to Nova Scotia, was owned and captained by Richard 3 Durfey (Richard 2, Thomas 1), of New London, CT. No deeds were found in the Norwich City Hall for the time they lived in Lisbon. John and Mercy moved from Lisbon to Canterbury, CT, between 1755 and 1760. On September 28, 1767, John and Benjamin Durfee, William Foster, William Hebard, Ebenezer Deane (Dains) and other residents of the western half of Canterbury, petitioned the Connecticut Assembly to create a separate Ecclesiastical Society in the western half of Canterbury so that they could have their own meeting house and minister. From the History of Windham County, CT, by Larned, page 42. Also found in the Connecticut Colonial Archives Volume Xlll, page 280C. On August 26, 1769, John Durfee, of Canterbury, purchased five and one quarter acres in Canterbury from Stephen Gates, David Gates, and Timothy Gates, all of Canterbury. John's deed was recorded on February 22, 1770, in the Canterbury Town Hall in Deeds Book 7, page 482. On October 21, 1771, John deeded this same five and one quarter acres to his son James. The deed was recorded on April 12, 1773 and reads in part "...I therefore give unto my said son James Durfey ... a certain piece of land bounded as followeth. Except one fifth part. Beginning at the South West corner ... Except for one acre and eight rods which is my sons Benjamin Durfey ... ". Canterbury Town Hall Deeds Book 9, page 441. Children of John Durfey and Mercy Foster are: i. John Durfey, born Bet. 1727 - 1730 in Prob. RI; died March 17, 1802 in Gloucester, RI. ii. James Durfey, born Bef. 1736; died Abt. 1800 in Royalton, VT; married Mary Warner Abt. 1753 in Norwich, CT.
Notes for James Durfey: The births of all of James' children were recorded in the Canterbury Town Hall Births Book 1, pages 124 and 128. James, Benjamin and Joseph were baptized in the Newent Congregational Church on Aug 8, 1742. The Newent District of Norwich, CT, was incorporated as Lisbon, CT, in 1786. From the Newent Church records Volume 1, page 121. On Nov 14, 1782, James Durfee purchased ten and three quarters acres of land from Silas Cleveland of Canterbury " ... beginning at a heap of stones on the north side of the old Windham road, so called, at the S. W. corner of the lot of land that lies on the north side of said road which Mr. Jonathan Downing deeded the the heirs of his daughter Elizabeth late wife of Benjamin Durfee ...". This deed was recorded on Nov 18, 1782, in the Canterbury Town Hall Deeds Book 10, page 176. In 1783 James petitioned the Connecticut Assembly for notes due the estate of his son Daniel. These notes were stolen from Daniel when he was taken sick in the summer of 1781 while he was en route to Yorktown, VA, to join Lafayette. On Oct 24, 1783, Daniel's estate was distributed to his surviving brothers and sisters. Those who signed the receipt were Israel, James Jr., Lovisa and Mary. James Sr. was administrator. From the Plainfield, CT, Probate Clerk's Book 8, pages 7, 13, 55 and 56. On December 2, 1783, Israel, James Jr., Lovisa and Mary Durfey signed a receipt for their shares of the estate of their brother Daniel who had died in the Revolutionary War. James Sr., their father, was the administrator of the estate. Plainfield, CT, Probate File Number 727. No record of military service has been found for James Sr. or James Jr., either in Connecticut or Vermont. James Sr. was not listed on any U.S. census of Connecticut or Vermont from 1790-1810. It would appear that James Sr. moved to Royalton, VT, between 1785 and 1790. On May 4, 1793, James Durfey, of Royalton, sold seventy acres of land in Royalton to Samuel Goddard. The deed was witnessed by James Durfey Jr. and Abiel Stevens. Royalton Deeds Book B, page 194. iii. Benjamin Durfey, born Bef. 1738; died Aft. 1810 in Prob. VT; married Anna. 8 iv. Joseph Durfey, born Bef. 1738; died June 4, 1794 in Cornwall, VT; married Abigail Buck WFT Est. 1746-1776. v. Elijah Durfey, born Bet. 1741 - 1745 in Lisbon, CT; died August 2, 1762 in Havanah, Cuba. vi. Mary Durfey, born Bet. 1741 - 1747 in Lisbon, CT; died Aft. 1790 in Prob. Royalton, VT. Notes for Mary Durfey: In some records Mary was called Molly. 18. Ebenezer Buck, born Abt. 1706; died WFT Est. 1755-1798. He married 19. Abigail Felt November 15, 1731 in Somers, Tolland. 19. Abigail Felt, born WFT Est. 1691-1720; died WFT Est. 1755-1809. Child of Ebenezer Buck and Abigail Felt is: 9 i. Abigail Buck, born June 28, 1732 in Canterbury, Windham, Connecticut; died WFT Est. 1770-1827; married Joseph Durfey WFT Est. 1746-1776.
