Ancestors of Ezekiel Zeke P. Durfey Generation No. 1
1. Ezekiel Zeke P. Durfey, born 1829 in Paulding, OH; died Aft. 1880 in Prob. OH. He was the son of 2. Reuben Durfey and 3. Clarissa. He married (1) Rebecca Fruchey September 15, 1855 in Putnam County, OH. Notes for Ezekiel Zeke P. Durfey: Ezekiel's birthplace in several records is given as Paulding, OH, but his father, Reuben, was living in Hartford, OH, when the 1830 census was taken. By the time the 1840 census was taken Reuben had moved to Putnam County, OH. When the U. S. 1850 census of Pleasant Twp., Columbus Grove, Putnam County, OH, was taken Reuben Sr. was dead and Clarissa Durfy's family was Clarissa 55, born in VT, Reuben 26, a laborer, William 25, a cooper, and E. P. 21, a shoemaker. The three brothers were all born in Ohio. The marriage of Ezekiel and Rebecca is from the Morman International Genealogical Index. When the U. S. 1860 census of Pleasant Twp., Putnam County, OH, was taken Ezekiel's family was E. P. 31, Rebecca 22, Eliza A. 4, and Mary M. 4/12. The birthplace of all was incorrectly given as Vermont. Living nearby and also listed on the 1860 census were Edwin Durfey, a 14 year old male living in the house of William and Amanda Fruchey (Franchey ? Possibly Rebecca's parents ?) and also a few houses away Marion Durfey a 14 year old female living in the house of R. C. and Margaret McCombe. One descendant spells Rebecca's last name Frichey. Her father was born in Ohio and her mother in Virginia. When the U. S. 1880 census of Crane, Paulding County, OH, was taken Ezekiel Durfey's family was Ezekial 51, a laborer, Rebecca 43, Nettie 9, and Emma 5. All were born in Ohio. Also listed on the 1880 census near Ezekiel were the families of Lauren, Lafayette, and Edwin Durfey. This Lafayette Durfey was Edwin Lafayette Durfey son of Ezekiel. He was 15 years old, a servant in the house of Judson Onstott, and was born in Ohio. Neither Ezekiel nor Rebecca were listed on the 1900 census and they probably died before then. Children of Ezekiel Durfey and Rebecca Fruchey are: i. Eliza A. Durfey, born 1856 in OH. Notes for Eliza A. Durfey: When the U. S. 1860 census of Pleasant Twp., Putnam County, OH, was taken Ezekiel's family was E. P. 31, Rebecca 22, Eliza A. 4, and Mary M. 4/12. The birthplace of all was incorrectly given as Vermont. She was not listed on the 1880 census and probably either died or married before then. ii. Mary M. Durfey, born April 1860 in OH. Notes for Mary M. She was not listed on the 1880 census and probably died or married before then. iii. Corintha J. Durfey, born 1862 in OH. Notes for Corintha J. Durfey: Information is from an inquiry by Lori Strable on GenForum on the internet at http://www.genforum.com/durfee/messages/46.html. September 1, 1998. iv. Edwin Lafayette Durfey, born July 3, 1865 in Cecil, OH; died January 1, 1947 in Sherwood, OH; married Mary Alice Carr Abt. 1888 in Prob. OH. Notes for Edwin Lafayette Durfey: In one record Mary's birthplace was given as Paulding County, OH. Also listed on the U. S. 1880 census of Crane, Paulding County, OH, near Ezekiel were the families of Lauren, Lafayette, and Edwin Durfey. This Lafayette Durfey was Edwin Lafayette Durfey son of Ezekiel. He was 15 years old, a servant in the house of Judson Onstott, and was born in Ohio. When the U. S. 1900 census of Crane Twp., Paulding County, OH, was taken Edwin's family was Edwin L. born OH, July 1863, a farmer, Mary A. born IN, December 1868, married 12 years, had 7 children, 6 still living, Joseph V. born October 1887, Thomas S. born February 1889, Frederick R. born November 1892, Nettie R. born October 1894, Hobart W. born October 1896, Samuel born October 1898, and Lydia E. born May 1875, Edwin's sister. All children were born in Ohio. According to her death certificate, # 31880, from the Ohio Department of Health in Columbus Mary died in Maumee Valley Hospital in Toledo and was a resident of Toledo at the time of her death. Edwin and Mary were buried in the Methodist Cemetery in Sherwood, OH. Edwin and Mary had twelve children as of 1909 and ten were still living. Seven of their children have been positively identified and Alice is probably their child and that leaves four children that have not yet been identified. v. Sarah Irena Durfey, born February 24, 1869 in OH. Notes for Sarah Irena Durfey: Information is from an inquiry by Lori Strable on Gen Forum on the internet at http://www.genforum.com/durfee/messages/46.html. September 1, 1998. I have a record of a Sarah J. Durfey who was born in March of 1869 or 1870 in Delaware County, OH. She lived in Delhi or Delphi, OH, when she died. From Delaware County Court House records Book 1, page 18. Is this the same Sarah? vi. Nettie Durfey, born 1871 in OH. Notes for Nettie Durfey: When the U. S. 1880 census of Crane, Paulding County, OH, was taken Ezekiel Durfey's family was Ezekiel 51, a laborer, Rebecca 43, Nettie 9, and Emma 5. All were born in Ohio. vii. Lydia Emma Durfey, born May 1875 in OH. Notes for Lydia Emma Durfey: When the U. S. 1880 census of Crane, Paulding County, OH, was taken Ezekiel Durfey's family was Ezekiel 51, a laborer, Rebecca 43, Nettie 9, and Emma 5. All were born in Ohio. Lydia was single and living with her brother Edwin in Crane Twp., Paulding County, OH, when the 1900 census was taken. She was born May 1875 in Ohio. In my old notes I have a comment that she may have had a son named Clifford L. Durfey born in 1892 in Paulding County, OH, but I list no source and have no recollection of my reasons for the comment. viii. Alice Geanette Durfey, born January 23, 1871 in Paulding County, OH; died May 12, 1943 in Paulding County, OH; married Samuel Edwin Gordon March 20, 1894 in Pauling County, OH. Notes for Alice Geanette Durfey: Information is from an inquiry by Lori Strable on GenForum on the internet at http://www.genforum.com/durfee/messages/46.html. September 1, 1998.[unidentified2.FTW]. Information is from a genealogy site on the internet in 1998. Also an inquiry dated September 1, 1998, by Lori Strable on the internet at GenForum www.genforum.com/durfee/messages/46.html. Lori gives March 21, 1894 for their marriage date and the other internet date is March 20, 1894. Also Lori gives January 23, 1871 for Alice's birth but the other internet site gives January 17, 1871. Generation No. 2
2. Reuben Durfey, born June 14, 1794 in VT; died Abt. 1845 in Prob. Pleasant Twp., OH. He was the son of 4. Elijah Durfey and 5. Elizabeth Aborn. He married 3. Clarissa Abt. 1815. 3. Clarissa, born 1795 in VT; died Aft. 1850. Notes for Reuben Durfey: A Private Reuben Durfey served in the War of 1812 in Colonel Benedict's Regiment of New York State Militia. Several Durfeys living in Vermont served in New York Regiments in that war. This may or may not be this Reuben. When the U. S. 1820 census of Hartford, Licking County, OH was taken Reuben's family was 1 male 0-9 years of age, 1 male 16-26, 1 female 0-9, and 1 female 16-26. Living nearby were his brothers Daniel and Elijah. Reuben was still listed in Hartford, OH, when the U. S. 1830 census was taken and his family consisted of 2 males under 5, 2 males 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 30-40, 1 female 10-15, and 1 female 30-40. Living nearby were his brothers Daniel, Alanson and Elijah. When the U. S. 1840 census was taken Reuben was living in Putnam County, OH, and his family consisted of 1 male 10-15, 3 males 15-20, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 40-50, 1 female under 5, and 1 female 40-50. When the U. Also listed on the 1850 census a few houses away from Clarissa was Raphael (the son of Lorenzo), a 4 year old male who was born in Ohio and living in the house of Samuel and Martha Connett. A listing for Reuben's widow Clarissa was not found on the 1860 census of Ohio and probably either died or remarried before then. Children of Reuben Durfey and Clarissa are: i. Eliza Durfey, born Bet. 1815 - 1820 in Hartford, OH; married Mathew Fuller December 10, 1837 in Putnam County, OH. Notes for Eliza Durfey: It is possible that Eliza was born in Cornwall, VT. The exact year of her birth and the exact year of the family's move to Ohio are not certain. Her marriage is from the Morman International Genealogical Index. When the U. S. 1820 census of Hartford, Licking County, OH was taken Reuben's family was 1 male 0-9 years of age, 1 male 16-26, 1 female 0-9, and 1 female 16-26. Living nearby were his brothers Daniel and Elijah. The female 0-9 was no doubt Eliza. The female 10-15 was no doubt Eliza. ii. Daniel W. Durfey, born Bet. 1815 - 1820 in Hartford, OH; died Bet. 1845 - 1848 in Prob. Putnam County, OH; married Clarissa Norton January 27, 1841 in Putnam County, OH. Notes for Daniel W. Durfey: It is possible that Daniel was born in Cornwall, VT. The exact year of his birth and the exact year of the family's move to Ohio are not certain. His marriage to Clarissa and Clarissa's marriage to John Crumley (Cromley) are from the Morman International Genealogical Index. When the U. S. 1820 census of Hartford, Licking County, OH was taken Reuben's family was 1 male 0-9 years of age, 1 male 16-26, 1 female 0-9, and 1 female 16-26. The male 0-9 was no doubt Daniel. Reuben was still listed in Hartford, OH, when the U. S. 1830 census was taken and his family consisted of 2 males under 5, 2 males 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 30-40, 1 female 10-15, and 1 female 30-40. The male 10-15 was no doubt Daniel. When the U. S. 1840 census was taken Reuben was living in Putnam County, OH, and his family consisted of 1 male 10-15, 3 males 15-20, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 40-50, 1 female under 5, and 1 female 40-50. The male 20-30 year old was no doubt Daniel. Daniel's widow Clarissa married John Crumley in 1849. When the U. S. 1850 census of Gelboa, Blanchard Twp., Putnam County, OH, was taken the family of John Cromley (Crumley) consisted of Clarissa 27, Zilpha 7, and Edmund 5, all born in Ohio. iii. Reuben R. Durfey, born 1824 in Hartford, OH; died May 21, 1862 in Crane Twp., OH; married Malissa October 3, 1850 in Putnam County, OH.
Notes for Reuben R. Durfey: When the U.S. Malissa's name was sometimes spelled Melissa. Their marriage is from the Morman International Genealogical Index. When the U. S. 1860 census of Crane Twp., Paulding County, OH, was taken Reuben's family was Reuben R. 36, a farmer, Malissa 36, Loran S. 9, June A. 5, and Brice 1. All born in Ohio. Reuben served in F Company 38th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War. Reuben died while home on furlough from the army. He was probably home on medical leave because of wounds or illness. On January 2, 1863, his widow Melissa applied for a pension. From the National Archives Civil War Pension Application Index. iv. William M. Durfey, born 1825 in Hartford, OH; died Bet. 1860 - 1864 in Crane Twp., OH; married Rebecca Jane Clingman October 20, 1850 in Putnam County, OH. Notes for William M. Durfey: When the U.S. William's marriage is from the Morman International Genealogical Index. When the U. S. 1860 census of Crane, Paulding County, OH, was taken William's family was William 34, a farmer, Rebecca J. 30, Hezekiah G. 6, Sarah 4, Jessamine 2, and Sylvester 2/12. All were born in Ohio. William may have died in the Civil War. Rebecca's marriage to Martin Smith is from the Morman International Genealogical Index. 1 v. Ezekiel Zeke P. Durfey, born 1829 in Paulding, OH; died Aft. 1880 in Prob. OH; married Rebecca Fruchey September 15, 1855 in Putnam County, OH. vi. Lorenzo Durfey, born Abt. 1826 in Hartford, OH; died Bet. 1846 - 1849 in Putnam County, OH; married Martha McComb July 3, 1845 in Putnam County, OH. Notes for Lorenzo Durfey: When the U.S. Also listed on the 1850 census a few houses away from Clarissa was Raphael, a 4 year old male who was born in Ohio and living in the house of Samuel and Martha Connett. Lorenzo's widow Martha (McComb) Durfey Connett's house was only a few houses away from her mother-in-law, Clarissa ( ... ) Durfey. Generation No. 3
4. Elijah Durfey, born October 7, 1764 in Ellington, CT; died September 1815. He was the son of 8. Joseph Durfey and 9. Abigail Buck. He married 5. Elizabeth Aborn January 25, 1787 in Tolland, CT. 5. Elizabeth Aborn, born May 20, 1765 in Tolland, CT; died Abt. 1855 in Milford, OH. She was the daughter of 10. Samuel Aborn and 11. Mary Ingham. Notes for Elijah Durfey: William F. Reed wrote in Volume 1, page 197 of the Durfee Genealogy that Elijah enlisted as a private on May 13, 1782 in Captain Teneyck's company (4th company) of Colonel Samuel Webb's regiment (3rd regiment) and was discharge on December 9, 1782. He served one other tour of active service in the 3rd regiment but the dates are not known. From the National Archives Revolutionary War Service Files (4252 and 4291). Reed incorrectly assumed that this was the service record of Elijah Durfey, son of Benjamin of Canterbury, Connecticut. Only one Connecticut Durfey named Elijah served in the Revolution and the fact that Elizabeth (Aborn) applied for a pension based on that service proves that it was Elijah, son of Joseph Durfey of Ellington, Connecticut. His war service is also recorded in the Connecticut Colonial Archives in the State Library in Hartford in Volume 8 page 106 and in Volume 12 page 335. On May 4, 1784, Joseph Durfy, of East Windsor, sold 25 acres of land to Joseph Durfy Junior in the northeast corner of East Windsor bordering on town lines of Somers and Stafford, Connecticut, and on other land owned by Joseph Durfy Junior. The deed was recorded in the East Windsor Town Hall on August 4, 1784, in Book 4 page 203. Elijah Durfey witnessed the signing of this deed. At this time Ellington was still part of East Windsor. On June 10, 1784, the same 25 acre tract of land was sold by Joseph Durfy Junior to Elijah Durfy and the transaction was recorded in Deeds Book 4 page 207. On February 9, 1785 Joseph Durfy sold land to Daniel Smith, both of East Windsor. Elijah was one of the witnesses. Deeds Book 5 page 138. According to Matthews' History of Cornwall, on page 59, Elijah was an early settler and by trade a cooper. Elijah was listed on the U. S. 1790 census in Cornwall, VT. This census was taken in 1791. His family consisted of 2 males under 16 years of age, 2males over 16 and 1 female. When the U. S. 1800 census was taken Elijah Durfey was a resident of Cornwall, VT, and his family consisted of 4 males under 10 years of age, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 26-45 and 1 female 26-45. He was not listed on the 1810 census. According to the History of Cornwall, on pages 343-345, Elijah Durfey joined the militia company of Cornwall, commanded by Captain Edmund B. Hill and fought under him in the battle at Plattsburg, NY, in September 11,1814. His sons Elijah, Junior, Daniel and Reuben also served in the War of 1812. On page 14 of the Licking County Ohio tax records for 1816-1822 Daniel Durfey and his widowed mother, Elizabeth Durfey were listed as residents of Granville Twp., OH. On June 5, 1850, Elizabeth Durfey, widow of Elijah, applied for a pension based on his Revolutionary War service. In it she stated that she was a resident of Knox County, Ohio, was eighty five years of age, that she was married to Elijah on January 25, 1787, in Tolland, CT, by Reverend Nathan Williams. She further declared that Elijah joined the American army in 1780, in the sixteenth year of his age, and remained in the service for eighteen months or longer and that he died in September 1815 while away from home and that she remained a widow ever since. From the National Archives Revolutionary War Pension Application file # 7722. The only Durfey who appeared on the U. S.1850 census of Knox County, OH, was Hiram Durphey in the town of Milford. He was a son of Daniel Ingham Durfey and a grandson of Elijah. His family number on the census was 357 and in the house next door was family 356. In that house was J.D. Murphey, age 54, born VT, Alsa Murphey, 50, born MA, Adeline Murphey, age 12, born OH, Lucy J. Smith, age 1, born OH and Elizabeth Smith, age 85, born CT. I'm convinced that this is the family of Daniel Ingham Durfey and that the incorrect name is the result of sloppy work on the part of the enumerator who took the information or someone who later transcribed it. In 1850 Daniel would have been 54 and he was born in VT, Alcy would have been 50 years old and she was born in MA, Daniel's daughter Adeline would have been 12 years old and was born in OH, Lucy Smith, age 1 year was Daniel's granddaughter by his deceased daughter Lucy (Durfey) Smith (Her husband was Henry Smith). Elizabeth Durfey, Elijah's widow would have been 85 years old and she was born in CT. The circumstantial evidence here is substantial. Children of Elijah Durfey and Elizabeth Aborn are: i. Willis Durfey, born March 25, 1788 in CT; died Aft. 1850; married (1) Olive; married (2) Sarah Harvey Abt. 1808. Notes for Willis Durfey: The identification of Willis as a son of Elijah and Elizabeth is in part on information from Wayne Durfey of Boise, Idaho. On the U. S. 1850 census Willis was 63, a farmer and was born in Connecticut and this supports Wayne's claim. On the U. S. 1900 census Willis' son Henry stated that his parents were born in Vermont and though Willis was not born in Vermont his parents moved there when he was only a few years old. This also supports the theory that Willis was Elijah's son. Sarah (Harvey) Durfey was a direct descendant of Miles Standish according to Wayne Durfey. Further evidence is found on a family group sheet in the Morman Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. It was submitted by Alice (Durfee) Rice of Almo, Idaho, and is dated 1914. The sheet is on the family of Joseph and Alice ( ... ) Durfey of Ellington, Connecticut, and the first four children are theirs, but of the following five children, the first of which is Willis, have all, except for Willis, been proven to be Elijah's and the birth dates listed for them are correct and proven in other sources. Alice (Durfee) Rice's line of descent is Henry D. 5th, Francillo 4th, Ebenezer 3rd, Joseph 2nd, John 1st. According to the 1800 census he had a son born between 1787 and 1791. Elijah moved to Cornwall, Vermont, about 1789 so his first child could have been born in Connecticut. When the U. S. 1850 census was taken Willis was living in Gainsville, New York, and his wife was Olive, age 60. ii. Elijah Durfey, born May 20, 1790 in Cornwall, VT; died February 10, 1882 in Columbus, OH; married (1) Clarissa Scovil October 3, 1815 in Cornwall, VT; married (2) Lydia Harris August 16, 1859 in Hartford, OH. Notes for Elijah Durfey: Their marriage is from the Vital Records Card File in the Vermont State Library in Montpelier. They were both residents of Cornwall at the time of their marriage. Elijah enlisted as a private in Captain Rufus Tilden's company, New York militia on July 15, 1812 and was discharged December 13, 1812. He enlisted again at Middlebury, VT, in Captain J. Hachet's company and fought in the battle at Plattsburg, NY, September 11, 1814. Information on his second marriage and his death in Columbus, OH is from Lydia's application for bounty land for his service in the War of 1812. From the National Archives Bounty Land Claims Files S 8105 and S 8719. According to the History of Seneca County, Ohio, published by Warren, Beers and Company, in 1881, on pages 282 and 465, Elijah built the first frame house in Monroe Twp (later called Hartford), OH, in 1818. He also became a member of the Congregational Church there in 1818. At a log School house in September 1819 in the first elections held in Monroe Twp., Elijah was elected Justice of the Peace and his brother Daniel was elected Town Clerk. When the U.S. 1820 census of Hartford, OH was taken Elijah's family was 1 male 0-9 years of age, 1 male 16-18, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 26-45, 1 male over 45 and 1 female over 45. The male over 45 years of age was probably his father-in-law or a hired man. Living nearby were his brothers Daniel, Alanson and Reuben. In 1824 the Township of Hartford, Ohio was laid out by Ezekiel Wells and Elijah Durfey. Elijah was listed in Hartford, OH, when the U.S. 1830 census was taken and his family consisted of 1 male 10-15 years of age, 1 male 40-50, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 40-50 and 1 female 60-70. The 60-70 year old female was probably his mother Elizabeth or his mother-in-law. Living nearby were his brothers Daniel, Alanson and Reuben. When the U.S. 1840 census was taken Elijah was still a resident of Hartford, OH, and his family was 1 male 15-20 years of age, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 50-60, 1 female 10-15 and 1 female 50-60. His brother Alanson lived nearby. On the Licking County, Ohio U.S. 1850 census Elijah was listed in Hartford, Ohio. His family was Elijah, age 60, Clarissa, age 60, Minerva, age 9, born Ohio and Martha Bowers, age 30, born Ohio. Living near them were Elijah N., Palina (Widow of Alanson) and A. L. Durfey. When the 1860 U. S. census was taken Elijah was still residing in Hartford and his family was Elijah, age 70, carpenter, born Vermont, Lydia, 43, born Ohio, Eliza, 17, Silus (Silas ?), 16, Mary, 14, Marth, 6 and Amelia 3. All children born Ohio. On August 16, 1859, Elijah married Lydia Harris. It is quite certain that the children listed in Elijah's family in 1860 were Lydia's children by a previous marriage. The census is probably wrong and their name was Harris not Durfey. On August 1, 1868, Elijah Durfey of Green Lake County, WI, and Lydia Durfey, his wife, of Hartford, OH, sold land in Hartford and the deed was recorded in Book 94, page 523. It is not known how long they resided in Wisconsin. Several of Elijah's grandchildren, by Alanson, lived in Green Lake County, WI. By the time the U.S. 1870 census was taken both were living in Hartford, OH, and on that census Martha and Amelia are called Harris (not Durfey). On another deed dated March 14, 1871, which both signed, they were living in Hartford. After about 1871-1877 Elijah resided in Columbus, OH. iii. Son Durfey, born Bet. 1790 - 1800. Notes for Son Durfey: The name of Elijah's sixth son is not known. He could have been Carlton, Lyman or Charles, or someone else. It is possible that his sixth son died young. It is also possible that the unidentified male born 1790-1800 listed on the U. S. 1800 census in Cornwall, VT, in his family was a nephew or an apprentice. Elijah Durfey Senior was a cooper. iv. Alanson Durfey, born July 22, 1792 in VT; died February 17, 1848 in Hartford, OH; married Perlina Cogswell February 19, 1815 in Prob. VT. Notes for Alanson Durfey: When the U.S. 1820 census of Hartford, OH was taken Elijah's family was 1 male 0-9 years of age, 1 male 16-18, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 26-45, 1 male over 45 and 1 female over 45. Living nearby were his brothers Daniel, Alanson and Reuben. Elijah was listed in Hartford, OH, when the U.S. 1830 census was taken and his family consisted of 1 male 10-15 years of age, 1 male 40-50, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 40-50 and 1 female 60-70. His brother Alanson or Elanson lived nearby. On line 1 page 237 of the Licking County, Ohio U.S. L. Durfey. 2 v. Reuben Durfey, born June 14, 1794 in VT; died Abt. 1845 in Prob. Pleasant Twp., OH; married Clarissa Abt. 1815. vi. Daniel Durfey, born July 13, 1796 in Middlebury, VT; died April 27, 1875 in Hartford, OH; married Alcy Cooley Rose July 15, 1819 in Granville, OH. Notes for Daniel Durfey: According to the History of Seneca County, Ohio published by Warren, Beers and Company, in 1881, on page 282. At a log School house in September 1819 in the first elections held in Monroe Twp. (later Hartford), OH, Elijah was elected Justice of the Peace and his brother Daniel was elected Town Clerk. On page 14 of the Licking County, Ohio tax records for 1816-1822 Daniel Durfey and his widowed mother, Elizabeth Durfey were listed as residents of Granville Twp., OH. When the U.S. 1820 census of Hartford, OH was taken Elijah's family was 1 male 0-9 years of age, 1 male 16-18, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 26-45, 1 male over 45 and 1 female over 45. Living nearby were his brothers Daniel, Alanson and Reuben. When the U. S. 1830 census was taken Elijah Jr., Daniel and Rueben were all living in Hartford, Licking County, OH. The only Durfey to appear on the U.S.1850 census of Knox County, OH, was Hiram Durphey in the town of Milford. I'm convinced that this is the family of Daniel Ingham Durfey and that the incorrect name is the result of sloppy work on the part of the person who took the information or someone who later transcribed it. Generation No. 4
8. Joseph Durfey, born Bef. 1738; died June 4, 1794 in Cornwall, VT. He was the son of 16. John Durfey and 17. Mercy Foster. He married 9. Abigail Buck WFT Est. 1746-1776. 9. Abigail Buck, born June 28, 1732 in Canterbury, Windham, Connecticut; died WFT Est. 1770-1827. She was the daughter of 18. Ebenezer Buck and 19. Abigail Felt. Notes for Joseph Durfey: On May 4, 1784, Joseph Durfy, of East Windsor, sold 25 acres of land to Joseph Durfy Junior in the northeast corner of East Windsor bordering on town lines of Somers and Stafford, Connecticut, and on other land owned by Joseph Durfy Junior. The deed was recorded in the East Windsor Town Hall on August 4, 1784, in Book 4 page 203. Elijah Durfey witnessed the signing of this deed. At this time Ellington had still not been set off from East Windsor. On June 10, 1784, the same 25 acre tract of land was sold by Joseph Durfy Junior to Elijah Durfy and the transaction was recorded in Deed book 4 page 207. On February 9, 1785 Joseph Durfy sold land to Daniel Smith, both of East Windsor. Elijah was one of the witnesses. Deeds Book 5 page 138.
