Maria E. Durant (daughter of Thomas Dennis and Thankful Durant) married James Elwood Stubbs on June 29, 1864, in Meadville, Crawford, Pennsylvania. In 1876, he deserted her and a son and moved to Chicago to become quite an eminent physician. Funny thing, though--the son graduated from Allegheny College in 1890, moved to Chicago, became a physician, and made quite a name from himself, too (his mother had been dead for several years). ++++++ From the New York Times Archives: August 14, 1885 ARRESTED FOR BIGAMY CHICAGO, AUG. 13 (1885)---Dr. James E. Stubbs, State Examiner for the Royal Arcanium and a practicing physician of this city, was arrested today on a charge of bigamy. The complainant was Mrs. Marie E. Stubbs, of Meadville, Penn., who says she was married to Dr. Stubbs in 1864 at Meadville, and that he deserted her at Corry, Penn. She came here and filed a bill for separate maintenance, and while the proceedings were pending learned that her husband had married again. Dr. Stubbs says he obtained a divorce from his wife in Aurora, Kane County, July 9 last, and then married Susan Roberts, with whom he was living when arrested. Mrs. Stubbs the first says she was not notified of the divorce proceedings. Notify Administrator about this message?
