Although you have not mentioned Mississippi in your post, I thought I might mention the following since you solicited guesses on how the name Bethel Durant might have come into existence. During about 1830-1870s, the Durants were a fairly prominent Choctaw band or family who lived along the banks of the Big Black River, which runs between Holmes County and Attala County in Central Mississippi. Established about 1821 by the American Board of Missions, Bethel Mission was located on the Natchez Trace, just north of Attala County, and served the educational needs of Choctaw Indians during the period 1821 through around 1840. Perhaps a member of the Durant family, whose members may have attended Bethel Mission, thought so highly of the educational efforts of the Mission, they named one of their children Bethel Durant? I am also aware that the surname Townsend is an Attala County surname that goes back to at least the 1850s in Attala County. It is not, however, a surname I track. Well, there is a guess for you to work on that combines Townsend, Bethel and Durant. Good luck in your research. Notify Administrator about this message?
