Moses Light Townsend, one of seven sons of Thomas Townsend and Elizabeth Stapleton, was born 1811 in Marlboro (Craven) County, South Carolina, and went through Georgia, Florida, before settling in Texas in 1838. He married Nancy, the widow of William Caldwell, in Colorado County, Texas in 1843. Nancy (maiden name unknown) was born in Georgia, according to census records. The couple had two sons, Moses Light Townsend, Jr., and BETHEL DURANT Townsend, and two daughters Mary Elizabeth and Martha Ann.
The Townsends were a large family and very often named their children after direct ancestors. I am curious as to the name Bethel Durant Townsend, especially since it appears that members of the Bethel Durant family were also in the same counties in South Carolina, Florida, and Texas at about the same time. Maybe it is a stab in the dark but does anyone have a clue as to how the name Bethel Durant came into this Townsend family?
