I suspect that the John Ashmore suspected of killing his uncle, John Durant, was actually John Durant Ashmore who became a state official and then a US Congressman before resigning to become a Confederate officer.

John Durant is buried in the Durant family cemetery in Horry County. He died in 1846 the year before the escape of the slave who
reported this in his book.

As to Waitors McIntosh he made some interesting observations. he later put himself through college and became a minister.
