Theophilus was an English immigrant who went to Samlem, MA 1642, fisherman from Devonshire, Eng. Sometimes referred to as Downing and called the fisherman. He received a grant of land in Salem Nov 23, 1643
The Colorado Genealogist gives name of Theophilus Dunning's wife as Hannah, maybe Lindell, however Harlan Jessup in Connecticut Ancestry says she was Ellen. In an e-mail from Harlan, he says the name Ellen comes from Richard D. Pence's transcription of the records of the first church, Salem. Theophilus (2) and Hannah are children of "Sister Downing," while Benjamin is the son of "Ellen Downing" [pp 18,20,21]
Harlan also cites History of Salem by Perley 1926 stating that May 23, 1744 Theophilus was named keeper of the pound.
Theophilus may have gone to Newtowne, Long Island with his son Benjamin and may have died there.
