Nope – there was no Nelson daughters Jane or Rachel A., but there were additional daughters Elizabeth, wife of Thomas John Hopkins, and Marjulian “Julia Ann,” wife (briefly) of Christopher Schrader. There was also another son named Joseph Nelson, who married Amanda Ivey. For reasons unknown, these last three headed backwards to Haywood Co., NC. Back over here in TN, the Knox Co. Chancery Court Docket #3632 identified the full list of heirs of John L. Nelson, and I learned of the others through that case file.

As for Cunningham, James Pratt and Rebecca Cunningham were the parents of James Newton Pratt, and the Baker, McMillan, Reed, and Hollis lines are ancestral to Charlotte Hester Baker.

Regarding the accuracy of John L. Nelson being a cousin of a signer, that seems extremely unlikely as a) John L. Nelson wasn’t even born until twenty years after the document was signed (and many decades after the birth of the signers) and b) no one – as far as I know – has ever identified John L. Nelson’s father, much less additional ancestors (which would be required to produce any evidence of connection at all). Sounds like someone spinnin’ yarns for the young’uns. --Carl
