Do you have access to the censuses? I use Ancestry.com for my census work. You can find the state that the parent was born in and go searching the census in that state. Before the 1850 census, you have only the head of family but no other names. However, that might give you a starting place. If I find several names in a county that might be mine, I try to narrow it down to one or two names according to age, then write to the local historical society or library and ask them if they have any info on __Dunn. There is usually a resident researcher for the library that does that kind of thing for a nominal fee. Since my hubby and I are retired, we enjoy going to these small town libraries and getting the feel of the area. We usually look under the family files and find something. Two years ago in Vermont, I found a complete family tree back to the 1300's in England. My work on that branch was done.
