My GrGrGrGrandfather was John W. Smith and I believe a brother to Martha Ella Smith and Margaret Lucretia Smith.
I first found this family in the 1860 Wilcox Co. census at Rehoboth Ala. This census shows Marcus Smith as head of household wife S.E., children William, Elizabeth, John, Susan, Robert, Fradrian and James.
I next find the family as you did in the 1870 Clarke Co. census, Marcus I assume has already died. Note the fact that the children's age match on these 2 census records, plus the fact that one of the girls has an unusual name first spelled as Fradrian in the 1860 Wilcox census in the 1870 Marengo/Clarke census spelled Fradre Ann this convinces me that this is the same family.
I was unable to find this family in the 1880 census also, but I did find Margaret & Martha Ella in the 1880 Marengo Co Census they are in the home of L.J. Dunn and are listed as nieces, so L.J. Dunn and Susan are brother and sister. I have a copy of Marcus Smith and Susan Dunn's marriage license they were married on 6-03-1848 in Wilcox Co. Ala. Also in the 1860 Wilcox Co. census a few papers previous to the Marcus Smith family, William Dunn is listed as head of the household and married to Fradrian Dunn note the unusual name Fradrian and this family was in the same general area. I believe this is Susan and L.J. (Lemuel James (Jim))Dunn's parents. I have talked with descendants of Margaret Cumalander and they confirm that they were
orphaned and some of the children were raised by their uncle Jim Dunn they also mentioned an Aunt Ella.
Martha Ella's brother John W my GrGrGrGrandfather married Martha I. McHenry 23rd Jan. 1875, they then moved to Newton Co Miss around 1875 the 1880 Newton Co. census shows this family and also in the same general area there is a Harmon Smith listed in the home of William Luker that I believe is the younger brother to Margaret, Martha Ella and John etc. The Luker family is John W's wife's relatives. I have photos of Margaret Cumalander and Fradrian Dunn that I will be glad to share and I would love to see any you may have. I also would love to hear all the details you have on this family such as do you know anything of what happened to the brother Jim, and were is Martha Ella buried.... just anything that you know and would share. I hope this has made some since to you.
