Theresa, this isn't very much, and I don't know where in NY or NJ your relatives were from, but it may give you a starting point to work from.
From the History of Sullivan County on page 645 -
“On the 2d of December, 1830, William Dunn was killed under very distressing circumstances. He was felling trees with several hands. As one he was cutting himself began to topple over, he, through a strange fatality, got under it, and was crushed to the earth. James B. Dunn, his faithful colored friend, was present, as well as John Johnston and some others. As soon as practicable, they removed him from beneath the tree-trunk, when he said, “Boys, I want to go to sleep,” and died.
There was only one slave enumerated in the town in the 1820 census enumeration and he was in the household of William Dunn. Perhaps the James B. Dunn, a slave, who d. Oct 1873 67y (ts) Glen Cove Cemetery. In the 1830 census enumeration James was enumerated as “free colored” with a wife and children in his household and enumerated next to Thomas and James Dunn.
