Catherine and Mary Ann Tipton both were granddaughters of Col. John Tipton, a Baltimore native who migrated to what was then Frederick (later Dunmore and Shenandoah) Co., VA, served in the VA House of Delegates in 1776 with Thomas Jefferson and Patrick Henry, migrated to what is now eastern TN in fall 1783, served in the NC legislature and was a key figure in early TN history. The Battle of the Lost State of Franklin was fought at his house. (See Dale Reed's John Tipton, John Sevier and the State of Franklin, published by the Tipton Family Association of America, 1998)
His eldest son was Samuel Tipton, 7 June 1852, Frederick Co., VA-21 July 1833 Carter Co., TN; bu. Greenhill Cemetery, Elizabethton, TN; m. 1 26 June 1776, Dunmore Co., VA, Mrs. Jemima Suttle/Sutte Little, a widow who d. by 1792; m. 2 1781-1787, likely ca. 1782, Shenandoah Co., VA, Susanna Reno/Reneau, b. 14 Oct 1767 VA, d.10 Feb 1853, Carter.(Charles D. Tipton, Tipton: The First Five American Generations, Baltimore: Gateway Press, Inc., 1998, 249)This, which will get you back four generations beyond Catherine, has Catherine as the eldest child of Samuel, and says she had 10 children; information on John Dunlap came in part from James Dwinell, Des Moines, IA. (Mary Ann was a daughter of Samuel's brother, John Tipton, Jr., also a colonel, and Speaker of the House in TN.)
