John Duncan to Bucks Co., PA 1697
Bucks Co. Court Records, 9 month (November) 1697:
The following boys were brought before the court to have their terms of service and ages determined. They were probably of the same Scottish shipload as the boy sold by James Trent (merchant of Philadelphia, son of William Trent who gave his name to Trenton NJ) in Burlington Co., NJ the same year:
Neel Grant, aged 13 years.
John Duncan, aged 13 years
The term of indenture generally is up at age 21.
It is sometimes said that the numerous Scottish boys brought over by the Trents were often kidnapped (as in Robert Louis Stevenson's book).
Other surnames associated with the Dunkins in their migration west, such as Hercules and Young are also on the court records of Burlington, Bucks and Chester Co., PA as boys brought over in the Trent boats. The Trents were originally from Leith or Inverness, Scotland.James Hercules aged 13, was brought to Chester Co. and appears on the court records on 3 Oct 1693.Other names in his boatload were McDaniel, Leacy, Mecany, Simson, Canide (Canaday?) and Driver.
