That's the problem.
Joseph and Elizabeth had all their children baptized at St Georges Church on the west side. Oddly, the baptismal records for the years 1838 to 1842 are missing. To further compound the problem, I went to the library at Queens University the other day and found that 1851 census available to the federal archives does not include the west side wards, or Lancaster so I also can't search my family in Chance Harbour in Lancaster Parish. Nor, to my knowledge, are they available in St John, likely because the federal buildings were burned in the 1877 fire. But why are the St John records for Kings, Queens, Sydney and Duke available as well as all of Portland. Joseph and Elizabeth lived on the west side at Ludlow and King. The 1851 census would have listed ALL the children.
The next census is in 1871 yet by that time, he has two children and is living on Carmathan St in the south end with his wife Margaret Johnston.
The only birth records for the period, to my knowledge, are church records. Almost all church records have been deposited with the PANB in Fredericton. The manager responsible for the church records searched for Samuel David Dunham's baptismal record and advised she didn't find one.
Now I have no idea what to do other than read the papers from 1838 to 1842 and hope against hope there is a birth announcement. Not even sure they carried birth announcements back then. The only other hope is to read any available ancillary records from St Georges church.
I haven't found a record of his marriage yet. That might have the information but I won't hold my breath since I have no idea which disclosure you had to make on marriage applications in those days.
Sic transit!
