ABIGAIL DUNHAM DORITY, 1793-1876, Rome/Stanwix/Floyd NY
I am researching for the parents of my great-great grandmother, Abigail Dunham Dority.I haven’t been able to make the connection, but based upon my own and others research, she could be the daughter of Joseph or Calvin, both residents of Rome in the early 1800s, coming from Massachusetts/Connecticut.I'm leaning toward Calvin for the reasons below, but if someone has the facts, please share.
According to what I know, Abigail was born in either Massachusetts or Connecticut on 17 February, in either 1793 or 1797, maybe even 1798.The uncertainty is because when it was written into the family Bible, someone corrected the last digit on top of the wrong one, and now you can't make it out. The discrepancy in the state comes from census records – the majority list Massachusetts as the place of birth, with Connecticut once and New York once.
According to the family Bible, Abigail married Charles Dority (Dougherty). The couple lived in New York’s Oneida County their married life, either in Rome Township, Stanwix or Floyd. The last time Abigail appears in a census is 1870 as Abigal Dorathy in the Town of Floyd. She died 21 March 1876, and is probably buried in Stanwix Cemetery, Rome NY.There is no marker, but there is a deed for a plot purchased by her husband. The only Dority marker in the cemetery is for Luther Dorety, their son who was a Civil War veteran, who was born 20 Mar 1832, and died in 1869.His grave is right in the center of an area devoid of other markers.I suspect there are unmarked graves for his father and mother around him, but unfortunately, I’ve been told the cemetery has no burial records.
Charles’ and Abigail’s other children are Eldridge R., born 15 Sep 1820; Edward H., born 28 Mar 1822; Charles B., born 10 Sep 1822; Sally, born 23 Feb 1827 (died 1829); Harriett A., born 4 May 1829, and Amos, born 25 Dec 1830 (died 1849).I think there may be an error in Charles B.’s year of birth as the possibility of two children being born 6 months apart and surviving is slim.Edward’s death certificate supports the 1822 date, as does his gravestone in Rome’s Wright Settlement Cemetery.
I base my assumption that Calvin and Ruth Noble Dunham are Abigail’s parents on the fact that while browsing the Stanwix Cemetery board meeting minutes, I found that an Ezekiel and an Alpheus Dunham appear as a trustee and sexton, respectively, in the 1860s.Abigail’s husband, Charles’, name also appears in the same record. This leads me to believe that there is a possible relationship between Ezekiel and Alpheus, sons of Calvin and Ruth, and Abigail. They’re all in the same place (Stanwix) and all involved in the same activity. They are also all of an age and born in Massachusetts, and Ezekiel L. Dunham named one of his daughters Abby P. Dunham. The only sibling of Abigail of whom I am sure is Elisabeth Thayer.I have the Bible that Elisabeth inscribed to her sister, Abigail, in 1860.
Can anyone help?Has anyone run across this Abigail Dunham in their research for Joseph or Calvin?
