Hi To All,
I am also among the several people who are trying to trace the ancestry of Job Dunham and the Dunhams of the Bay of Quinte area cira 1800.I will try to add what I know in hopes some of the confusion concerning this Dunham line can be cleared up by joint efforts.I believe that the Dunham family moved west through York County, Ontario and finally many of the next generation end up in Michigan circa 1850-1860.
What I know so far:
1801 John Dunham on Adolphustown census
1802 John Dunham on the Adolphustown census
1808 John Dunham and Darius Dunham on the assesment roll of Fredericksburg
1810 Job Dunham marries Elizabeth Jacobs in Fredericksburg
1811 Moses Dunham son of John and Eliz. Jacobs born
1822 J. Dunham on the Militia role of Hallowell township,Prince Edward County
1829 Job Dunham listed as a purchaser of items at the auction of Daniel Haight`s farm in Adolphustown with John Dunham listed as providing surety for Job.(History of Lennox and Addington Counties)
1830-circa Job Dunham age 44 and Israel Dunham age 42 both are on the reserve militia list for East York County
1833 Moses Dunham, son of Job, marries Elizabeth Robinson in Whitby township,York county(Job and Israel Dunham were witnesses)
1833 Sarah Dunham, prob. daughter of Job,marries James Silver in Whitby,York County
1834 John Dunham marries Anna Thomas,Reach township,York
1837 Moses Dunham listed in the Gazetter of York County
1839 Israel Dunham marries Harriet Thomas,Whitby,York(? second marriage)
1843 James Silver living in Queensville,East Gwillimbury township,York county
1849 William Dunham,son of Israel Dunham,Marries Cerissa Belfry of Queensville,East Gwillimbury,York County
1850 Job Dunham, his sons Moses and Job Jr. are enumerated on the census of Kalamazoo county,Michigan
1858 William G.Dunham buys property in Michigan two counties north of Job and Moses
1860 Job Dunham,Moses Dunham,Job Dunham Jr.,and James Silver all live in southwest Michigan( Van Buren and Berrien county)
1863 Job Jr. and Moses are listed on the 1863 Gazetter of Michigan with occupation as carpenter and coopers in Hartford,Michigan
1870 Moses Dunham and James Silver,Job Jr.all live in Berrien county
I am also inclined to believe there may be a connection between these Dunhams and the Dunhams of early East Gwillimbury which include a Benjamin(1808) and a William who has a son Benjamin in 1803,and a John (1805) all who lived and owned property in East Gwillimbury at these times.See History of East Gwilliambury by Gladys Rollings. Also there were other Dunhams there at this time but were of the Thomas Dunham family from New Brunswick and were loyalists(also).
My theory is John Dunham of the Bay of Quinte area had sons (maybe John,Job,Israel) and the family spread westward perhaps meeting other Dunham relatives in the East Gwilliambury,York area circa 1830-40s.Of course this dosen`t answer the question of where, when and who John Dunham is or came from. If a connection can be made with the other York county Dunhams this may be a big clue as I think they were from Dutchess Co. New York and related to the Briggs family of that area.
I think this is accurate info and verifiable. IfI made an error I will correct it later,if there are any questions I would be happy to respondand I really, really hope someone will add to this scenario. Bruce Flewelling- a ggggrandson of William G. Dunham
